This one is pretty cool.

Why is there now a lume plot outside the date window, further out than any of the other hour markers go? Why is the date window itself no longer even bevelled at the edges? Does Seiko suddenly believe it can make date windows invisible?

Agree the automatic thing is well weird too.
“20bar” or “diashock” would have been fine
Or just nothing

Clearly still looking @ OG Pelagos for inspiration. sic. (cribbing)

You’re right. This is ridiculous! Let me give them a call and get back to you.
Honestly though, the person responsible for all the tiny lume bits next to the date should at least have a talk with the manager as he/she messed up quite a few different Seiko ranges by now.

Someone in the comments on Hodinkee says its because there's new ISO specs requiring lume at 12 positions on the face. There's an answer. Is it the right one? Who could possibly say.
-
• #52535
That’s a good answer! I hadn’t heard about that, going to dig into it. The correct response from Seiko would be to drop the date of course 😎.
That’s going to really mess with a few classic designs if true.

Couldn’t the whole date wheel be lumed? Although .. in the dark 30 days prob doesn’t work.

Tried the baby D on a zulu strap. Not sure yet.

Yes, but not as effectively as the markers.
You also have the problem of only the bit of the date wheel that is exposed getting any light. Lange solved that problem though!

Seemed accurate insofar, was expecting it to be a minutes or two out by now.

If it the case their solution still doesn't feel ideal - even a date at 4.30 would be an improvement!

• #52541
Well it would certainly explain why they've done exactly that on the SLA049 and SLA051:
Edit: the article even mentions that as a possible reason. Wonder what Rolex are going to do about their divers watches with dates.

Also techinically a watch that went to space too, good article on learning about Uemera.

Wonder what Rolex are going to do about their divers watches with dates.
Plz explain. Sorry I wasn't following.

• #52544
Apparently new ISO regs for divers watches state that the watch must have lume at all 12 indices. There are lots of divers watches with a date at three instead of an hour marker, eg the Submariner Date, Sea-Dweller etc., that presumably no longer meet the regs.
Seiko take pride in having “Diver’s” on their dive watches, which it seems they wouldn’t be able to do on a new watch without having lume at three. Rolex don’t actually use that designation on their watches so it’s probably more a question of pride / marketing.

Scary how a movement made of cheese can keep such good time.
Makes you think, longevity aside, how these jumped up brands can sell so willingly at such extortion.
Looks like Seiko want in!

Also looking at you Omega

Still going with the Super Compressor. It's really grown on me has this. Looks like they've discontinued this model (by all accounts it wasn't a big seller) and only kept the blue face.

• #52548
I actually think the date windows being moved look so much better.

Scary how a movement made of cheese can keep such good time.
The movement is very robust, it is known to be reliable but not known to be accurate.
It is design to keep ticking even when there’s dirt and grim in the movement.

The Russian way eh? :oP
You still have the Americana-esque “Automatic” script though, which is arguably worse. Compare it to the beautiful original dial.
They really dropped a bollock with that watch IMHO. The cheapo Prospex version isn’t supposed to look better than the fancy one.
