What time is it? Watches and horology

It's been on my list for a while!

Went down the rabbit hole until I saw the SBGY003. Damn that is a nice watch.

I tried one of those on a while back, pre-lockdown. It’s pretty nice! And quite thin.

Aside from the huge price difference and limited quantities, what were your thoughts comparing the 2. The SBGW231 just looks far less balanced in pictures but the SBGY003 looks very thin in your photo.

They didn't have an SBGW231, unfortunately - I was hoping to check it out but it's only recently started being officially distributed in Europe this year, I think. Still not seen one IRL.

The SBGY003 is actually thin, which is unusual for modern GS and it feels thin and light on the wrist. It felt like a proper dress watch, more than an everyday wearer. The dial was less reflective than I expected but it's really weird to look at because the radial lines just keep getting thinner and thinner - like you think it's going to just flatten out in the centre, but no, they seem to just keep getting thinner until you can't actually make them out properly with the naked eye. Not sure I've seen anything else like it. Very impressive watch, I didn't feel a great pang of desire to own it, but that's probably because it's a bit too fancy for scruffy old me.

I've kind of arrived at the same conclusion. I'll wait to see if they have another limited edition nearer to a big birthday. The 231 does look like a good alternative considering the amount of time I'm likely to wear it. The 003 does look very special though, it seems so thin that the deployant kind of unbalances the strap. All the same if I came anywhere near one it would threaten my bank balance.

I think the SBGK007 is very wearable on a casual strap. That could definitely be a smart daily watch. Nice movement too. But still a significant premium over the SBGW231.

I'm not a fan of the power reserve on the face. The lugs and case shape look great though. Sub seconds dial always makes the watch seem very calm by comparison with a big blue seconds sweep.

I really like it. Grand Seiko but a bit rugged.

Not that expensive either.

Idk I think it's like 15 mm thick. Good diameter size for that kind of watch though.

Presumably I'm the only one who desperately wants the new Casio G-Shock x Hodinkee Ref.6900 by John Mayer... missed the drop but think I may buy an overpriced one on eBay/ Chrono24

Got bored of my daily watch (took a month) and looking for a new one.

Cannot go wrong with khaki, original manual wind one is the loviest (if you’re happy not having auto).
