  • second left is so tasty.

@multigrooves i thought you were building a titanium dream once upon a time. it even had me wishing i was doing the same and had me ebay searching for litespeeds for a while. the pocket watch has a moots look about it. that was all.

  • ultimate moderate geekery modelled by my feminine yet manly wrists (you fnckers)

  • coulda matched the time :)

  • Ffs...

  • Plus, isn't it usual to do 10 to 2, rather than 10 past 10?

It has ruined it for me now.

  • must. not. bite....

  • You could've trimmed your wrists, at least.

  • But then he'd have this weird patch of hair on the back of his hand, and a feminine clean wrist.

  • Thinned out the "fur" a bit...

  • I've searched across LFGSS and can't see that anyone has posted this before but apologies if I am duplicating here.
I found the below video interview with eminent watchmaker George Daniels (now deceased). A fascinating listen. Even if you have less than a passing interest in mechanical watches, the obvious artisanship, ingenuity and dedication of a man machining minute engines is quite beguiling. It passed the time at work on a Thurs afternoon anyway.

Oh, the complete recording has been chapterised. I found it easier to select the first chapter and click on "ALL" in the Play mode (just underneath the image). That way the whole thing plays beginning to end.

  • Rubbish. In the WIS world, IWC are highly regarded. I believe some of their current range leaves a little bit to be desired in the looks department but they are an excellent brand.

And isn't the idea of running a business to make a profit? How much does the regular t-shirt cost to make? It is all relative..

Of course they're highly regarded. They have the background and the heritage. But they use that reputation to massively inflate their prices, not unlike Rolex for example. It makes great business sense for the owners of the business but not so much for the consumer, unless of course that consumer is happy to shell out 15k for a watch that's not 10k better than a really good 5k Omega.

  • Ved, is it the same on the palms?

I posted those after his death last year.

I've watched them all and they're fascinating!! He was an excellent storyteller and it sounded like he's lived an awesome life.

    Aha - sorry about that.
    Great storyteller indeed.

  • Don't be sorry, it's a brilliant series and documents a great persons life really well.

  • Oh Zeddy!

  • Now that I have a a small (5) collection of watches, I was thinking of a good, inexpensive, non-tacky was of displaying/storing them. Anyone have any good home hacks or ideas that they've used?

  • one of these bolted to the floor

  • Buy cheap, buy twice.

  • one of these bolted to the floor

And then put the whole building on some kind of rotator to keep the watches wound.

    That would do it.

  • Seeing as each of my watches are of less than £100 value each (not accounting for sentimentalityismness) I don't think that is entirely necessary... was thinking more of a bedside table/dresser stand, or just a nice box with compartments.

  • Sorry everyone, slightly OT.

I need advice. My 1950's Rolex Explorer stopped working. Rolex quoted £670 to fix it. It has come back untouched and Rolex have said that the watch is to old to be fixed. I king of half expected this.

It has stopped working in the past and I have used a random bloke of the interweb. The watch worked for around 8 - 10 months but then stopped again. Plus it cost around £300.

Does anyone know if the watch can be saved? If so a contact or something?? Much appreciated. It would be a shame to chuck it out.

  • To upload an image, put it on flickr or picasa or something, you can't link from your computer directly... there's a thread about it somewhere if you need more help.
