From this thread I've been linked to a video informing me that alongside a dress watch and a sports watch I must also own an industrially inspired watch for when I work on the car, and an article imploring me to wear an expensive watch at the weekend because when dressed in understated civvies it will be the only way to impress on others my income bracket.
Don't know about you, but when I get under my 8 year old ford focus to slip spanners and shear bolts I always like to ensure I've got 15k worth of stainless strapped to my wrist. I also can not bear the thought that I might meet someone and fail to leave them with no doubt in their mind that I have the spending power to do a full week's groceries in Lidl.
Funnily enough, when I've been asked if I wear my Speedmaster when riding bikes, motorcycles, doing DIY, working on bikes, rocking out, etc and my reply has always been, 'sure, why not? It's a good watch.'
You're the one wanting to drop hundreds of pounds on a worthless quartz POS because you are seduced by the design, not me. I just wanted a really good watch.

Zing!

I aspire to own a non aspirational watch

Not sure I agree with your sentiments about IWC Joel. Its an interesting point though!
I've been looking at both the Omega Planet Ocean and the IWC Aquatimer, there is not a huge amount of price difference between the two, well its £650, (which could actually get you a very nice auto from emerging boutique/brands).

no no, that wasn't me wanting to buy it, I just thought the design was preferable to the Gareth efforts enjoyed here. And yes, I do wear a Swatch.
I have a special watch when I want to 'Rock Out'. Stroker.

Ouch.
My point was not that you should buy a pilot watch instead but that it was overpriced and by some margin.
You could also get this for a similar price:
If you want "non-aspirational" then get a Swatch... same quality as the Uniform Wares and a quarter of the price. As for calling the Uniform Wares watch "non-aspirational", i think the reason it's so horribly overpriced is that it is aspirational in it's design. It's certainly not priced that way because of it's quality!!!
That's well nice. How much? Is it available with two hands?

Yes it's available with two hands. Depending on coating, they're between €390 & €490... http://www.defakto-uhren.de/defakto_onehandwatches_startseite.html

Nice. I do actually prefer autos and manuals; I get it - the quality of engineering and all that. Just hate the status symbol / overspecification aspect so common in expensive watches.
Wish the two handed version of the above was sans logo.

Easy enough to pick up a good quality new Swiss automatic watch for much less than £500, it just won't be a top marque...

I want one of these. -

?
i thought the design was similar to things you had a soft spot for and as such it would have been on your radar from way back when :-)

Very nice - Some great watches on that site
Speedbird III (PRS-22) from Timefactors. Tis a wondrous thing.

I have a thing for cheap Timex watches at the moment
-
• #4767
I love my cheap Timex watch, mine actually cost £20, but it was a nice size Abd pretty light, I don't have to worry too much about it.
^ Loved that design, I like the dark green/black version better thought.
I only have two watches, cheap timex and a lovely reproduction of a Chinese air force watch.

I do love the look of it, yes, but the pricing of Uniform Wares is crazy. And bad Robert Mugabe crazy, not good Willy Wonka crazy.
I think I've had a few rants about them on this thread before.

Ahh, Bobby Mugabe - a sort of less ambitious but equally self-absorbed black Hitler.

Anyone on here know where I could see one of these in the flesh in London? A google doesn't throw up any physical shops..

Hello edscoble,
I've just purchased a Timex T2N389 in London and it'll probably take some time to arrive since I'm in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
I understand you own one, right? I'm searching for a rubber band replacement because I do not like the stock one. For that I need 2 key measurements: distance between lugs (where band is attached to the case) and buckle width, measured from pinhole to pinhole. I've contacted the seller asking for that but he doesn't have the watch in his hands.
Would you kindly help me on that?
Please check figures 1 and 3 at http://www.watch-band-center.com/shop2/index.php?user=watchstrap&weiteres=9
Thank you very much.
Cheers,
Rodrigo

got my albatross fixed and it didnt cost the earth :-) all appears to be fine in terms of time keeping and functions.
i was quoted in the region of £800 for a refurb last year (i think it was that much)I saw James May was wearing one of these in last night's Top Gear, as he drove the AC/DC singer's 4.5 litre Le Mans Bentley.
Ouch.
