  • I very nearly mentioned cut off numbers!

  • edit: cut off numbers too FFS

  • Hehe, doesn’t bother me in the slightest and makes the watch a bit different. It certainly works for me as a whole.
@ChainBreaker solid case back (unfortunately, as the water resistance is sh*t anyway and the movement is quite pretty) and just under 15mm thick (Including the crystal) - I think the sapphire glass box adds a good 1.5mm. It certainly doesn’t feel as thick as I thought it would.

  • Having a Kano day today.

  • Yeah I like Xmas crackers.

  • If anyone is on Reddit they do a live streaming thing. Tonight a guy is fixing a 94 year old watch. Quite interesting. This is a screen shot.

  • I hope you don’t mean me. I have no problem with cut-off numerals.

The difference in spacing between the numerals in 10, 11, and 12 though...

  • Ha! No, not you. Interesting you consider yourself the font nazi.
    [cry laugh emoji]

I was just joking about how so many ppl will take issue with such minor things.

If I remember correctly the Last I remember you having the hump was over a watch with like 5 different fonts, and rightly so too.

    the space between the numerals

  • Minor things?! Typography is everything! [bangs fists on keyboard]

It’s usually only Arial that sets me off tbh. It’s lazy and doesn’t belong on a watch yet you see it on Patek tourbillons and all sorts.

  • The difference in spacing between the numerals in 10, 11, and 12 though...

    Can't unsee that... 😬

  • It's not that bad to be fair, there are good reasons why you wouldn't want exactly the same spacing in those three pairs of numerals (the 10/11/12 on the hour totaliser are a good example and are much better) but in general the larger the type, the tighter you want the spacing and the more obvious those kinds of differences are. The 10 could be better balanced to my eye, but all typography is just taste and opinions anyway so feel free to ignore me.

It's a good looking watch and they've done a nice job on the details - in general Longines seem to be really good with their recent heritage stuff, the type is very accurate. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a vintage reference with exactly the same spacing.

  • I think its balanced with the big subdial and if you look, the 4 5 have a similar spacing...

  • I'm talking about the gap between the 1 & 0, the 1 & 1 and the 1 & 2 in the 10/11/12 numeral pairs.

It's normal that you'd have a bigger gap in the 11 but in general with numerals like these you'd expect to see a more consistent spacing within the 10 and 12. On the Big Eye, for me, both the 10 and 12 are a bit tight and in the 10 in particular the 1 & 0 are a lot tighter than I'd expect. (I say a lot tighter, we're talking minuscule differences here.)

Couple of examples of vintage Longines that have spacing more in line with what I'd expect for the style:

  • Font nazi status: confirmed

  • Font nazi status: confirmed

    Stop fontificating.

  • Anyone interested in this? Lovely thin hand wind dress watch.

Brand new in box w/ tags on etc. Bought it in the half price sale but just bought a new motorbike so sending it back. Literally only worn for this photo.

Just want what I paid for it which is £297.50.

  • This is why I love this place. Every day is a school day.

    Also this is lovely:

Makes you wonder sometimes why they even bother redesigns sometimes instead of a straight copy.

  • Interesting stuff.
I think if I'd see what you see, I wouldn't buy that watch. It's good to know that I am not the only one being picky/having odd preferences :-)

  • Yeah and call it a re-issue. I guess the manufacturing processes have changed too much and people nowadays prefer larger watches though?
