SARB is a good shout, I would have suggested one of the new "zen garden" ones but they come in at either 38mm (eg https://www.seiyajapan.com/collections/seiko/products/seiko-automatic-presage-sary149-made-in-japan) or nearer 42mm (eg https://www.seiyajapan.com/collections/seiko/products/seiko-automatic-presage-sary141-made-in-japan). The SARB was 38 too though.

I think there are quite a lot of options that fit the bill, but are only gonna be found by hunting.
Swimming doesn't really require massive m's or a screw-down crown. Quartz is probably the best way to keep thickness down though.
I guess the best bet is to try the zen gardens in the flesh though, as it's always surprising how differently a watch can wear depending on design.

Never really bothered looking into this as knew it was based in Southampton but didn't know it was quite so close, I used to have band practice in my late teens about a minute walk from here. This is the Swatch UK Service Centre. Looks in terrible shape. The whole area of Millbrook has always been pretty ropy.

I tried to put two - one at either end of your requirements and failed 😢

Yeah I have - they’re imo an under rated watch and come up on eBay for good prices. Don’t you have one?

I do. And I love it.
I think they're an underrated brand. Inventors of the winding rotor as we know it. It's a brand with heritage.
Some of their vintage models are lovely and very good value.

Er, what have they done? That’s the Aqua Terra that was updated a few years ago, right? It’s a nice watch, I tried it on. The 38mm size is very good (the 41mm version is too big for my liking, is that the one you were thinking of?) and I like the overall vibe but for me the finishing compares poorly to a Rolex OP at similar money. I prefer it to the Railmasters though (even though I like the fully brushed vibe of the RM).

Jesus christ, I just looked up the price of those things. I'd have to own a yacht off Monaco to risk scratching one of those things.

That FP Journe does nothing for me

i don't get it, either. what makes it a 'grail watch'? is it just the price?

Yeah it's a green version and I was saying that this particular model would look great in an olive green tone!
Meant to type 38mm not 39mm as you say. I think it's an underrated watch out of the Omega line up and I also prefer this to the current Railmaster. Haven't tried one on, shame that you say the finishing is a bit weak, will be interested to see it in the flesh.
Get Bamford to bead blast it.
