  • It'll buff out...

  • I feel your pain.

Gently polished all the little scuffs from the crystal on the Omega 30T the other day, and within 6 hours put two proper scratches on it, one vertical and another horizontal. Was not impressed.

  • Bugger is about right! Will you try polishing it out?

  • A bit of poly-watch significantly reduced how visible the scratches are, but they're pretty deep so (I suspect) beyond the scope of manual polishing. Omega said £140 to fix, so I'll leave it for now, get it done when I have the watch serviced

Also, I'm on the list for the 1948 Seamaster (12th of a list of 10) so if two people drop out I'll be collecting that in March (in theory!), at which point I might see if Omega would take a look at my Speedmaster, "as I'm here", but that's pure conjecture as to whether they'd pop a new hesalite crystal in. Given that I buy a watch per year from the same Omega boutique I'd think there's a fair chance, however.

  • How did you damage it?

  • Alright kiddos. Hoping for some advice here.

It's my folks Sapphire wedding anniversary this weekend and I want to get my dad something with a sapphire crystal. It also needs to be easy to read, automatic, British if poss, metal bracelet, and on the larger side as he's got hands like shovels. Gold, oddly, would be fine here but there aren't many gold watches in the sub £300 range.

I like the look of the Smiths Everest by Timefactors but as it's not an actual Smiths I don't know if they're worth the cash. Any feedback? Or any other ideas for similar watches?

I'm idly considering the SNZH60 by Seiko. It's not British but it ticks all the other boxes so far as I can see.

  • Not entirely sure, but I think I brushed against the edge of a shelf in the barbers, very expensive beard trim if so.

  • I defy anybody to find a better value watch than a Smith's Everest. It's a corker.

Maybe others will have suggestions but I don't know of a better option.

  • That's great to hear. I love the design but it's hard to tell if that translates over the internet. I'll make a call on this tomorrow. Thanks dude.

  • Shirley sapphire = rainbow Daytona? Might be short notice to source one though, Everest is a belter. Presumably the new larger one also comes with this jazzy micro adjusting clasp.

  • Yikes, still better than cracking a lug or the bezel. Have you been watching the price of these Tintins lately? Bananas

  • I have not been watching the price- I’m guessing it’s good news?

    (For guessing substitute hoping).

  • Not that I’d sell it, that said.

  • Nightmare. I would be hopping mad. And yes, expensive beard trim indeed.

  • Good luck, sending thoughts and prayers.

  • You could have a look through Page & Cooper’s site, they sell a few British microbrands. Sapphire crystal and mechanical movement at that price might be an ask though. Even Seikos don’t usually get sapphire for under about £800 rrp.

The Everest is a winner tho.

  • Actually the Seiko SRP775 turtle with the gilt accents (gold & black bezel etc) comes on a bracelet, and is really nice. I’m wearing mine right now.

They actually do (or did) make a full gold tone turtle, but it didn’t come with a bracelet, just a rubber strap with gold hardware.

  • Proving my point that watches without sapphire crystals are rubbish.

  • If you bought a watch a year from me I would be doing that for you as a thankyou.

  • Just had one of these become available if anybody interested.....

  • If it had a sapphire crystal then it would not be a moon watch. If it wasn’t a moon watch then the whole Tintin/rocket story loses something.

I’d rather have to replace the crystal due to my clumsiness than spoil the watches story.

  • I’d rather not replace a £££ crystal every time I was clumsy. But then, I daren’t wear a watch to the tune of a Moonwatch because I’d rather not replace a £££ crystal every time I was clumsy.

  • Correct sir , only hesalite glassed speedmaster professional are moonwatches

  • I'm mostly just winding you up.

    Also Tintin is rubbish.
