  • Always find it odd when professional sellers take a photo with the crystal removed. The seconds hand is incorrect. I wonder if the dial is original to that case.

  • To mask their inability to photograph through a reflective surface/hide that the crystal is crazy scratched?

  • Supposedly the crystal is replaced/to be replaced.

I was browsing to see check values and see whether it was financially viable to repair/service 2 omega watches I’ve inherited, quite liked the look of the one I linked.

Perhaps someone here can point me in the direction of someone trusted who might be able to service the watches?
I’ll have to check models etc, but both are seamasters i think, gold plated manual with leather strap, and the other a stainless seamaster automatic, assumed about 1960-70s.

  • I can recommend Olivier here:

Very nice guy. He is BHI qualified.

  • He’s currently working on one of mine too, very thorough. Can’t wait to see the results.

  • The old school amongst you may recognise the mecha. 😎

  • OMG! That Mech! How long you had it? Photo of it 'transformed'?

    So jel right now!

  • Heh. Macross Plus. Had it a few years now. 😎

    Not my pic.*

  • Think I have all the Macross on DVD if anyone is interested

  • Would it not ruin it by rewatching it? What's the quality like?

  • Probs hate yourself for watching it, yep. DVD's are scratch-free, video quality is pretty clean as I remember. It wasn't a dodgy Manga release.

  • The Omega cal552 will be winging its way to a new owner very soon. Quite sad to see it go, but hopefully the new owner will love it...!

    May be a G-Shock Friday...

  • What is it, looks Seiko? Maybe a prototype because it doesn’t look like anything on google.

  • Current obsession.

  • I prefer the 2nd one because it has fewer roman numerals but there are two things that I don't like...

The way the 5-minute marker numbers flip orientation at 4 & 8 and the fact that the minute and second hands don't align to any dial markers - they sit halfway between.

Dual wheel date window is lovely though.

  • minute marker numbers flip orientation

Never sure why you dislike this so much, do you not think it 'makes sense' for the numbers to stay the right way up?

Out of curiosity, how do you feel about markers that always stay vertical the whole way round?

  • It bothers me as well... But not as much as the Roman numerals, I'm a modernist when it comes to man baubles...

  • In general, I don't like numbers on a dial at all - the fewer the better. I know how to tell the time by now so they seem largely unnecessary and just clutter things. If they are there, they should be oriented the same. It's one of the reasons I fell out of love with my Nomos before i sold it.

If you look at a recent shot of my watch box, only three have numerals (all divers with numerals on bezel) and all orient consistently.

The messiest watch that i love is the Daytona (still on a few lists for one...). With the exception of the 6 on the hour chronograph function, this follows the rules:

The Speedmaster dial is superior to the Daytona in that regard as it's consistent across the entire dial and bezel... I just like the rest of the Daytona more.

  • I’m a no numeral guy too, only one watch in my entire collection and that was inherited (edit: and Smiths Everest).
Current wank material is the early 1019 Milgauss, sadly I only won £12.70 on the Euromillions.

  • Yeah, I'm not a fan of Roman numerals either. But I do really like small Arabic ones on the minute track. I spotted a vintage Day-Date somewhere that had them, and it looked so much better than either the Roman numerals, or just the lume pips (imo)

Re the Daytona, if the 6 followed the same rule as the other's wouldn't it be 9?

  • Who would people recommend for modifying a watch?

  • You might want to make your question a little clearer....

  • Get a service dial from Omega, remove existing lume and apply new, fit to watch with matching service hands, retaining original dial and hands.
