What time is it? Watches and horology

So that's not one I can get in Argos or H samuel ? ( you just messin' with me now aint ya)

I've spent ~£5.5k on a 'Seiko'
I've also spent ~£2.5k on a Rolex

The Rolex has gone up in value (maybe 60%, though a lot of that is exchange rates) and the Seiko has gone down in value (about 5%, though it's only 8 months old so too soon to tell long term value).

I don't plan on selling either.

The Seiko feels nicer to wear, i get more compliments on it (I don't remember the last time anyone complimented me on the Rolex) and it's clearly the higher quality of the two. I wear the Rolex more often because it feels less special but also because I don't have to worry about it.

It's possible to like both; I like both.

I’m not really into Seiko’s designs (mainly remind me of Japanese cars in some ways, ie. not very artistic, sometimes unoriginal), but I worked on one of these Seiko 6139 watches a while back and I liked it. It reminds me of the Omega Chronostop in some ways:

A 5% drop in value in the seiko is purely hypothetical. Try and sell it.
It will be worth what someone is prepared to pay you for it.
I had a client who wanted to part ex a recently purchased Grand Seiko against an Omega aqua terra day date. I said no as after I asked about nobody would even bid me ANYTHING on it. And I was the third or fourth Omega stockist who had turned him away.

You're right, I just based it on chrono24 listing prices - no idea if it will sell at all but i'm also not trying to sell it.

I don't understand why resale should always factor into ultimate worth. For an investment - absolutely; but why does it have to factor so much into buying something you like and want to keep?

For me resale etc is just the icing on the cake.
Knowing you can wear something every day and enjoy and it will still be holding it's value if you do want to unload it / part ex against something else, is a great feeling.

That's a beautiful watch , I had a Gold Tangente limited edition that I sold. And I regret it every day.

You’re right; if you plan to keep forever then the resale value does not matter.

But for someone like me who collects watches, it’s very important. I wouldn’t have the balls to pay thousands of pounds for a watch if I thought it might reduce in value by hundreds. I just couldn’t afford that.

So if we can agree that, it's perfectly plausible that re-sale value isn't the be-all and end-all then I'm guessing your main argument against Grand Seiko is that you don't like them? That's valid for you but it can't be used as an argument to bash someone else's choice to buy one...

I think the Grand Seikos look nice. I read some online comparison between one and a Rolex, and technically they seem to be superb. I’m not really interested in new watches, so wouldn’t buy a new Omega, Rolex or Seiko. Just buy what you like.

Also I am much more likely to spunk more on a Seiko than a Rolex.

I own some hideous looking watches. So hideous that I wouldn’t ever wear them. But they are significant pieces of history, and valuable in their own right.

To some extent, the same applies to antique clocks. None of them are extremely accurate, but you are still going to pay more for a
Graham Deadbeat escapement than a regular Recoil escapement because it’s special.

^ No but it does come with an 'eccentric' persona. Think Eddie Jordan etc.

At the amount that the 10 unique pieces cost, individually, i'm sure you could ask to have a unicorn printed on it.
