Awesome. Ta muchly.
I'm a stickler now for watches with dates. Because I can never remember what date it is anymore.

My watch of choice this week is this day date timex. Actually I've been wearing it for a week and a half and not got round to setting the day or date.

Sorry. I didn't catch that. Now why am in the kitchen holding a pair of scissors?

That's nice. Proper old school and not to dissimilar to one I remember my grandfather wearing.

It's running a bit late, no?

Can't have a date now unless it's a big date complication ala;
Frustrates the fuck out of me when I need to put on reading glasses to read my watch (and can't stand surface mounted cyclopseseses). Had a PAM with an under-glass Cyclops once that worked ok, but those blobs of congealed spit on the surface of the glass - errgh.

i need to hold a real one and store that feel in my brain. at the moment if one was offered to me for £100 pounds i wouldnt know if it was real or jokes. i remember on the documentary 'time machines' the presenter takes delivery of one from china ........ and he seemed impressed.

The weight difference between the Chinese offerings and those from Switzerland are like the differences between Steel Nitto Jaguar stems and Aluminium.

Slight update in the watch search.
Firstly, this:
It's my grandfather's old watch. The strap is a bit ropey, the glass is scratched, and it has sat unused for about 30 years so it could do with a thorough service, but it seems to work perfectly and is keeping time well (no obvious change in past 24hrs). I think it's pretty smart so I could use it infrequently as a dress watch.
Secondly I tried on a few watches in town. Most shops I visited had very similar selections inc. Tissot, Seiko etc. but it was hard to find many of the watches I liked from the suggestions above. I tried a visodate but it looked very dressy in person and I wasn't a huge fan. I couldn't find either a Seiko SKX007 or Steinhart Ocean Black but I tried a SKA371P1 and although I wasn't 100% I think it was my favourite watch of the day... unfortunately however, it was vetoed by my GF who appears to have something against the bezel on diver style watches.
I think the only watch we both liked was a Citizen Eco-Drive titanium. However, I wanted something automatic... This may be a misplaced desire, especially since I don't know much about watches but the salesman failed to convince me about the eco-drive mechanism.
I'd like to find somewhere I could try some of the SARB varieties... I like the SARB033, and although I don't like the leather strap on the SARB017 I saw a picture where it looked good with a metal bracelet as well as Nato type straps.

Very nice. You shouldn't need to service it like you say, if you are just wearing rarely as a dress watch.

Junghans Max Bill or Nomos Orion?

Vetoed?
I think you replied to the wrong post... I definitely have nothing against my AT!

Your grandfathers old Omega is very nice. I once asked the guys at ALSAL if an old auto works, does it it need servicing? They seemed to think it wasn't required if it keeps decent time.
Citizen Eco-Drive movements are very good, but essentially a quartz with a light charged capacitor instead of a battery. They don't last forever like the ads say as the capacitor loses the ability to charge after several years. I like them as they are accurate and relatively robust but I have had 2 fail after about 5 years. These were diving watches used in the surf though.

Speaking of which, still searching for another watch that's not a diver... looking at:
or
Leaning towards the Seiko
Lovely.
They're screw links so adjustment is easy.
