no restrictions on pedals.
if you want to use a hire bike, bring a pedal spanner so you can swap them around

+1
but it is worth mentioning that at the forum track day there were quite a lot of issues with mtb cleats and pedals and unclipping, which thankfully didnt result in any disasters, but could have done.
i'm planning on using my road pedals and shoes for the track.

ok thanks guys, mights still use cages depending on whether i get new cleats or not, managed to pop out while braking hard the other day.
On another note, what is the typical tyre size if using clinchers. Would 23c be suitable or is something narrower recommended?

23 is fine.
Most track tubs are 22. TT and Pursuit riders might use 19...
As for pedals. As long as your foot is secure in the pedal there should be no issue. On the indoor tracks they sometimes stop riders from riding with MTB clipless pedals.

I'm planning on using spds on an outdoor track this year. Not as good as look i know but I'l tighten up the tension to the limit. Hopefully that'll do me.

Looks for the win!

I use SPD-R's, changed over to them from clips and double straps which is what I had used on the track since I started in the 80's...
SPD-SL and Look work just fine as do Time (many Pro's in at the World Cup were on Time) and Speedplay.
Can't see any issue with SPD (MTB style) as long as they, and the cleat, are in good working order. Should hold the foot just fine.

I'm going to be using Time Xen carbons on the track this year. But I've been using the budget shimano MTB pedals till now and had no problems with clipping out in sprints.

I have just purchased a brand new pair of SPD-Rs from ebay. I had to pay a lot for them as they were boxed and they are discontinued. I have to say, they are the absolute bollox. I was flying with them on the way home last night.
Almost impossible to come out of even on the loosest binding. In fact I almost had an embarrassing dismounting accident, which I have not had for many years!

You can drill them to fit toe straps aswell! Good purchase Mr C.

Cheers Jim. I was looking at the modifications that people had made for straps.
I never pulled out of my SPDs before, so I will be surprised if I pull out of these.
They are really nice pedals, no idea why they are discontinued. I received some abuse on the other forum when I revealed how much I had to pay for them !

It's funny, I keep pulling out of my SPDs when pulling up hard. Happened on a climb and also when skipping down a hill (I don't do the later very often!).
They are set on tight so I guess I must be twisting my heal when lifting.

It is possible that you may have the multi release cleats. You need to check the product id on the cleats
Single release are SM-SH51

yeah but SPD-Rs are different, special even.....knew you'd like them Mike, personally I'd keep them for the track, the reason I love mine on the track is the reason I wouldn't ride them on the road...
You can really feel that added power transfer can't you?...something to do with the footplate being very close to the centre of the axle.... apparently.

Yeah, I've got the 51's. Think I'll get someone to watch my pedal action. See if that brings up something.

They do look to be extremely well made and secure.
Will the cleats fit shoes with Look drillings?

Are the ultegra/105 versions any good?

Mine are the ultegra version, almost identical, but with cromo not titanium axle....I think

Which shoes you using mike and winston?
Thought I'd give them a go, and the bolt split the cleat hole, I'm using specialized sport road. Nice man at condor said pop them in, so fingers crossed.
F*ck me, how difficult are they to get in and out of? Any tips, or are they just a bitch?

what are peoples views on speedplays for the track, i dont think i want the track specific version as i think they woould be dangerous to use getting to and from the track but i feel drawn to them.
i dont need them for any specific reason (like bad knees or owt) im just inth e market for some new shoes and pedals and they seem interesting.

Speedplay are awesome. I'm gonna consider some.

They are almost impossible to get in and out of. I have to jump every light now (no good at track standing ) otherwise it takes me a few minutes to get my feet back in. Hopefully this will change.
You need shoes with the 2 in-line holes.
Like these
Yup, them's the shoe I got. Let's see what mr condor can do. Fingures crossed the weather is good for Saturday!
hi there,
with the re-opening of herne hill nearly upon us, i wanted to know if i will be able to use my clipless pedals on the track, or if they have certain restrictions on them.
