it was calibrated. are you suggesting im lying? to be honest i think this forum is a bit above lying about silly things like top speed.
anyone with the right hill, road, and bike can go crazy fast, it just a case of overcoming the fear. i road that hill everyday scince i started riding a bike as an adult. i also set the bike up myself so have complete confidence in it not exploding.

What gearing were you using?
52:13.
the roads behind my dads are pretty empty and pretty hilly. the spot i hit is a long gradual (though semi steep) curve by the lake.i just looked and the top speed on my computer was 48.6, so i guess not quite 50. other than that i've never hit over 30. -

I'm suggesting your speedo is being very generous.
It's not a case of overcoming the fear. It's a case of overcoming wind resistance.
It must've been a fucking steep and long hill since you can't have been pedaling at that speed. -

Self-preservation not high on your todo list then? -

These threads always turn out the same way.. tomorrow's highest speed will be 118kph hit on the Uxbridge Road when someone's bag strap accidentally got caught in a police van door...

Too late, since riding home tonight my speedo said 1283.657kph which, once ratified, will be added to the Guinness book of records. Sorry Thrust SSC.. [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_speed_record[/ame]

I was riding home from a party along a clear road at about 2am when a mate came up behind me in his car and told me I was doing 22mph. I was totally surprised - didn't realise I could go that fast and wasn't even at top speed so I put the hammer down and he told me I had hit 30. I was quite shocked, especially as a few minutes ago I had been riding the fastest I have ever been on a bike (geared or not) down Barnet Hill. I was partly terrified because I was spinning so fast, but because the road was empty I thought I'd push it as hard as I could manage - my guess would be close to 40mph on 42/16.

Riding in a bunch down into Brighton, two of us were spinning madly on 42x16 and, according to riders with computers we were nudging 35mph before the other fixed rider's chain came off. We slowed down at that point.
Ask Fixedwheelnut though - I think he's hit 40mph on fixed.
With a freewheel, as has been said, you're limited by the road and your nerves. I've never broken the 45mph barrier but hit 44.7 on Westerham Hill years ago.
October 2007 41mph on 48 x 18 with 23c tyres 67.3" = 205rpm
It is the only time I have topped 200rpm and probably only a nano second as I maxed out at the lower end of the hill.
On the flat it was about 32 at 160rpm, pub sprint, "the real trackies can beat that easily.
In the days of gears 51mph early 90s on the Action 100 Bath to London ride, I even had my feet tucked in on the top of the chainrings and bricked it once I saw I was over 50.

It was early on near Bristol, my mate Ray just started sprinting away at the top so I just raced him down :) I stopped pedalling at 42 in 52 x 12.
I remember a set of traffic lights near the botttom was part of the reason I bricked it in case they changed. -

I hit 44.92 mph going along embankment the other day, I think I could have gone faster though, with 51x18 gearing.

I may on occasions, be somewhat liberal with the actualite.
Putting it in italics won't stop Oliver pointing out the missing accent
Andy, you are abusing your liberté a bit.
I mean, it's no skin off my nose, but if you want to be poncy, do it properly. ;)
I heard that sometimes Ray arrives at his destination before he's left his departure point. He is that freakin' fast.
That happens to me sometimes, too, usually when the destination is identical with the departure point.
