That Variflex is cheap, but I wouldn't bother. The wheels will be dire so you'll have to change them, and as they're 55mm there's no riser pads and the bolts are short, so you'll have to spend there. Thr trucks won't be any good either, look a bit like GTs which were on the poly boards of the 70s.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=190290353262 These are good little cruising wheels if they go for around £20.

Thing is I really don't want to spend more than £40 overall..I have never skateboarded and just thought it would be fun to mess about cruising etc. Specially down hills..what if I got some of these wheels:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/POWER-PAW-70s-Old-School-Red-FS-50mm-Skateboard-Wheels_W0QQitemZ270288456159QQihZ017QQcategoryZ23830QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153.l1262Or I could build it from scratch:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OLD-SCHOOL-1970s-Rockered-Blank-Skateboard-Deck_W0QQitemZ330311690132QQihZ014QQcategoryZ16263QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262
Is a start and I could save up over time and spend a bit more? -

I've actually got a few sets of Power Paws, they're cheap and from the 70s but not what you need. Decks and trucks from the 70s are fine, but the wheels these days are far, far better.

So under a tight budget, should I make it from scratch which would be more expensive or would I be able to get the carving lovelyness out of that variflex board if I just got some wide wheels and new bearings?
The alternative is that blank board for £20, generic 80s trucsk for £13, bearings for about £8, wheels for £20? Which is a fair bit more.. -

Is a start and I could save up over time and spend a bit more?If thats your budget, get the 'mindless' cruiser complete.
Its £59.99 - best offer. You could probably get it for £50
Its certainly a lot cheaper than building something separate. And looks pretty good.

Good call. At the same time I like the thought of someting I built from the ground up, spray my own board etc :) Fixed gear mentality eh!
And I like the narrow boards' look.

I don't know what the quality of the Mindless boards are like I'm afraid, they don't look too bad, but...
If you're in London try popping into Blue Room at the top of Oxford street, they'll have some cruising/old-school boards you'll be able to look at.
Looking on ebay for something cheap to cruise around on, this is the best I could find http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/7-ply-SKATEBOARD-deck-with-FURY-TRUCKS-SLAMMER-WHEELS_W0QQitemZ160318921410QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Sporting_Goods_Skateboarding_Skating_ET?hash=item160318921410&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 If it goes for under £20 including postage, I think it might be ok. -

Actually I might get that mindless one and just respray it. I live 2 seconds walk from Slick Willies and the guys there are mega nice so might try and get a discount..:P Credit punch and all that.

dude dont spay your board. unless you want a soggy piece of wood, and thats about as usefull as having a floppy as youre about to put it in her. mindless boards are fine if you just want to cruise round in. no a few people who have had them but snapped them easily, but that was while doing tricks on them. theyll do for carving like a cunt :)

Toddtwist is selling this board http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Single-Kicktail-Power-Paw-50s-70s-Complete-Skateboard_W0QQitemZ220373956657QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Sporting_Goods_Skateboarding_Skating_ET?hash=item220373956657&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A10%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 as a complete for the same price to the one that you're looking at, but this one is slightly longer and wider, which is useful. He doesn't have it listed as a board on its own though. Well I can't see it anyway. Might be worth contacting Sean Goff (who is toddwist - he used to be a pro in the 80s) if he'll sell you one on its own.

This year I shall be mainly using these
A Pavel GOG for tight slalom and a Kaliber #87 for GS. And it's smaller brother the #77 for general cruising about. Longboards are fine on hills and if you've got loads of space, but I prefer a shorter board for weaving in and out of people. Wheelwise, I'm on 3dm Avalons or Retro Zig-Zags and trucks are Tracker or a Tracker/GOG combo.

Thanks for the help 606. Gonna get those bennets instead then. Would you recommend ply for a board rather than a solid piece of wood then? I have to say I don't like the shape of that board tbh. I prefer the narrower ones. I'll start with the trucks anyways and then I'll look for some decks.

Do any of you who have boards not suited for todays kind of riding (trick oriented) go to skateparks and just ride around as if it were a bowl? I've always been put off by skateparks as very intimidating environments but once I'm up and running it'd be fun to go with a small group.

Stockwell sometimes has people cruising around and its pretty fun just to carve around there, but its best to go during the week/early otherwise it gets packed.

+1 on the Avalons (I have some Avilas, same shit diff size) they are the best wheels I've ever ridden.
Also loving the Abec11 No Skoolz spaghettiman posted. I got em on my Real gonz 37"er.... farckin quick for paving at 88a.

Btw you not been going to the trixie sessions?
Also, the board I got is completely bear, do I need to treat it with anything?
What did you get in the end? Are there any upgrade which would upgrade how well it runs? I'm probably going to by some soft wheels with it but I mean bearing/ bushing wise?
