Visiting from Manchester, what kind of tyres do you think i need for that gold paving you have down there.....?
The pneumatic variety.
Seriously, whatever you ride there will work here.

Okay, the list is kinda long, and I'm assuming it's going to get longer.
Right now there's no one leading this convoy of cyclists, since Lurker's gonna grab us when he can.
So I've a cunning plan.Anyone whose done this ride before and wants to make sure it goes as well for new riders as it went for them first time out, PM me.
With the possibility of this ride exceeding the hundred mark, the easiest way I can see of getting this ride safely and without incident across london is to split it into smaller groups. I'm thinking 3x groups of about 40, or whatever the final number of riders actually is, with us having staggered starts, say 9.30, 10.00 and 10.30.
This ensures everyone gets to ride in a manageable group, which won't spend too much time blocking up junctions, so the ride should be quicker.
People who want to start a bit later can do.
It enables the leave no rider behind strategy to work within the confines of a big ride as there will be another group coming up behind in a little while, so you can tag onto them and enjoy the rest of the ride.Anyone has any issues, thoughts, input, let me know.
We'll need at least two or three people who know the route to head/lead each group so stick your hands in the air and let me know if your available. For those who have done the ride but ain't sure of the whole route, and want to be a part of the adventure that is organisation and safe transport of a mass of riders, we'll do a recce a couple of nights before. The only problems, tricky bits that I remember are the connecting roads from wandsworth bridge down to kew.be well...

Cornelius, that's a great idea...
Anyone has any issues, thoughts, input, let me know.
Do you want to know stupid ideas too?
Could you have two groups on opposite sides of the thames both going west-east (or the other way round) but passing each other on the bridges?
Probably very silly (is there a nice route on the opposite side to that normally taken?) and would probably decend into a race between the two groups...
even beter (or more silly) if two other groups were going in the opposite direction... and four groups crossed over on the middle of waterloo bridge or something!

you could, but the bridges ride route takes you along the nice bits of the river on both sides, this might be best if you a small bunch of mates rather than the large mass we'll have.
Probably very silly (is there a nice route on the opposite side to that normally taken?) and would probably decend into a race between the two groups...
I point the right honourable gentleman to my previous answer
even beter (or more silly) if two other groups were going in the opposite direction... and four groups crossed over on the middle of waterloo bridge or something!
think this would be really difficult to co-ordinate, but if you faked it would make a great photo...

this idea is stupid, sorry corny, its just a bit nanny state.
Big rides are more fun, just make a longer line, half the people won't turn up, as always, especially when they discover that it starts in the west.
There will always be one rider left behind, its how it goes.
I also don't remember any really small sections aside from a small bit.
Finally i don't want to have to wonder where someone is and find they left half an hour earlier.
-
• #243
One thing about staggered starts is that some of the more competitive among us may be tempted to catch the group in front. Not me though, honest...
-
• #244
I won't be able to make it, as I won't be in London, but I think there's strength in numbers, and I'd vote in favour of keeping the ride together. That said, I haven't been able to make a Bridges ride yet and don't have experience of how it was the last few times.
-
• #245
I think it's a good idea. Well, I should... I suggested it.
Well, what i said to a few people was that some of the larger rides are perhaps too large, and that perhaps we should be evolving towards the Dunwich Dynamo way of doing it which is more of a "turn up after X and leave when you want".
The notion being that we are sometimes the greatest danger to ourselves, and that we could thin out the group to help with these things:
- Leave no-one behind = whole group only goes as fast as the slowest members
- Leave no-one behind = if people have punctures (inevitable) the whole group is slowed
- Lots of bikes, very thin space = especially on the bridges ride the potential to have needless accidents is increased
- Punctuality = getting Y people together and ready all at the same time is hard, always one more person to wait for
By thinning out large rides (100+) you can remove a lot of the standing around and let people go at whatever pace they are comfortable with (some people want to go faster, some want to go slower).
Instead of it being about keeping it all together, it can instead be about riding.
There's nothing in what corny suggested that says who should go when, he just proposed that by leaving in groups we achieve the thinning out without impacting on the fact that you're still doing a large ride with lots of others and will see lots of other people.
And it means that only a few people will be needed to follow the tail and make sure everyone is OK. Which can only be a good thing.
Basically... thinning out really large rides allows them to get even larger with even less overhead on those who help organise such things. It's putting you lot back in control of how you want to do the ride, as individuals and not as a single mass... how moving towards an anarchic system could be viewed as nanny state I do not know.
Of course... whether this is a really large ride is yet to be seen. But the idea of thinning out the really large groups so as not to have that single mass certainly isn't a bad one and things like the Dunwich Dynamo prove that as a method to handle the increasing numbers it can work really well.
- Leave no-one behind = whole group only goes as fast as the slowest members
-
• #246
i'm also not sure about the staggered starts, the last one held well over 100 and no probs at all. (well except spag doing endo's) like MickMcT-shirt says, some in the groups behind will catch up.

i think that leave no one behind is commendable and something that really helped the ride. however, there's always a however isn't there, it might be better that when there's an incident that instead of the whole ride stopping that the ride has rendezvous points. for example, if there's a puncture/incident some of the ride stops, helps people out, gets the group left behind rolling and meets everyone else at a drinks/food/smoke break point.
so for instance, a rendezvous point west to east could be putney bridge, one at the end would be trafalgar square (photo opps innit) and tower bridge. vauxhall would need to be navigated around properly. (i think we diverted round the thames path last time).
plus there needs to be somebody around to make sure i don't end up lost again.

I know the way from West to Central and would be willing to lead that part, from Central to East I haven't got a scooby doo.
Thinking about it what is the most eastern bridge?
