stardancer has been played to death. you can always tell a dj who does not know his tunes as there is a really rough edit in the middle that makes it almost impossible to mix the entire length of the track (claude young and derrick may can do so but few others can react that quickly).

    I am a 313 geek but 313 is greater than 531!

  • I can scratch mix out of that without any headphones, piss easy!

    Synopsis

Pioneering Detroit techno DJ Derrick May presents a special edition of the 6 Mix, featuring three new mixes which showcase his musical make up, and talks about his work as a producer and DJ.
May - best known for his 1987 dance anthem Strings of Life under the name Rhythm Is Rhythm - has been an iconic name on the techno scene for over twenty years, DJing worldwide to a devoted fan base and pioneering the scene's distinct, hard sound. Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, May's work - alongside that of Juan Atkins and Inner City's Kevin Saunderson - has provided a catalyst for a number of producers worldwide.
Over two hours, May plays tunes which have inspired him from the likes of Marvin Gaye, D'Angelo and Jean Michelle Jarre, alongside dance tunes from Lil Louis and Hamilton Bohannon. Derrick also plays a brand new 60 minute mix of his signature hi-tech soul sound, which he describes as "George Clinton meeting Kraftwerk in an elevator.".

The show is available to listen again seven days after broadcast via bbc.co.uk/6music. BBC 6 Music can be accessed through DAB digital radio, Digital TV and online at bbc.co.uk/6music

  • nice.
    i'd have missed it.
he comes across a bit arrogant in interviews, but cannot deny his influence.

Praise to the DJ - Praise the May

Him and Juan Atkins made many a Friday and Saturday night for me.......

  • this is gonna be a treat. enjoy and thanks for the tip off .

  • Voices....................inside my head..........echoes............things that you said..................

  • thanks Graham for the heads up.

  • Shit! Missed it, I'll listen again on next week...

    Any good?

  • pumping. moody sections. fairly fast bpm. obscure mixed with standards.
shimmering spanky french kiss rocking again......

  • I'm glad this thread exists.

Juan Atkins & Kevin Saunderson in particular i can't get enough of.

From them I got me into British stuff like LFO, and more modern stuff like John Tejada and Ghostly Records – all noticeably influenced by Detroit.

  • YouTube - E-Dancer (Kevin Saunderson) - Warp - Heavenly Album - Pias Records

I like Saundersons later sound like ^above^

Saunderson's live 'Elevator' show is amazing. Weirdly frozen around a time I would have been a kid... but sensational all the same.

I saw Kevin Saunderson in Hearne Street car park last month - for a big man he can really move. It was a top night.

Also caught Jeff followed by Carl at Sonar this year; for a precious few seconds they were on stage together. Amazing. Of all the early pioneers I think Mills is my favourite.

  • "Detroit legend Carl Craig plays a hush hush set this Sunday Nov 29th in the basement at East Village while New York disco original John Morales launches his new album upstairs.. 8pm-1.30 £5 unmissable"

hmmm. carl craig and dj have never really worked for me, although for a fiver i'll give him another chance!

I can't find a youtube of minus by rob hood, but anyone who's heard it will know right well what i'm talking about! in fact, internal empire is one of the best albums ever, coming from a genre where the album is an almost irrelevant format.

I always thought this was the OG from '90
