  • Anyone have any suggestions for good/great Gastropubs up in Yorkshire. Going to be up there for Christmas and Missus wants to escape the fam for a bit.
We’ll be up in east Keswick, so anything that is around Harrogate, knaresborough, wetherby sides would be good.
From googling most of the chi chi recommends are an hour or more drive away, hoping for something within 30mins or so.
This is currently closest but is pricey….

  • 👍

Maybe looks a bit too basic - if anyone has any advances on WooJung.

  • Had one of the best meals of late at Sune, a new opening at Broadway market. Ran by well experienced founders with Akoko, Noma, Lyle's...etc under their belts. Very tasty food, great service. Who knew Hackney needed another small plates natural wine restaurant?

Oh and a different vibe, we did our work do at Oslo Court Restaurant. Charmingly 90s - I think? I was too preoccupied with Pokemon at the time. But anyway, very nice oldschool hospitality and decent food. Worth the price.

  • Oslo Court Restaurant. Charmingly 90s

I like the look of this. Never heard of it before but thinking I might go there in NY.

  • Polpo...I do love the design of his books though, the naked spine, so you could lie them flat to read recipes was a revelation (at least for me) and the recipes inside were good too..

I might have some hazy memories but I'm sure @Regal played a part in the design of the Polpo cookbook? It's also one of my favourites as it was where I took my now wife on our very first date.

I went to Fallow restaurant in Haymarket last week, their USP is using ingredients which are usually discarded. The cod's head was very good as were the corn ribs.

  • I'd suggest looking at Lambs Conduit/Red Lion St or the area south of the British Museum.

    Hoga?
    Bi-won BBQ?

    How fancy do you want?

  • I didn’t design the Polpo book, it was done by a couple of friends that I was at art college with.

I did do some work for Russell Norman a few years later when I was freelancing at the digital agency that made all his websites (they also did Ollie Dabbous’). I drew the logotype for his short-lived non-kosher Jewish deli called Mishkins.

Very warm bloke, with a real eye for detail. He always knew exactly what he wanted.

  • Cheers for those. The evening got rained off in the end.

It was just that WooJung looked like a canteen, which wasn't the vibe.

Ironically my OH is going out with a mate for Korean, so if they find somewhere good I'll post it up.

  • I ate at Kolae in London Bridge yesterday and would thoroughly recommend. Thai place, but more interesting than most - small plates, but some absolute highlights in there, and the smack of fish sauce and grilled meats as you walk in is amazing. Lovely space too.

  • Is black axe mangal as still good as it was ? looking for a good charcoal kebab place for Saturday lunch.

  • It's really good, but if you want more trad charcoal kebab I think Testi is almost impossible to beat. BAM has gone the way of Mangal 2 and does fancy small plates and set menus etc. Both great options and very delicious, but not your trad kebab place, if that's what you're after.

  • we went to Master Wei Xi'An in Hammersmith on the weekend and it was astounding. One of the best meal's I've eaten in a while and a pleasant modern canteen vibe. If you like spicy Chinese food then go - just don't slurp your noodles and get chilli sauce in your eye

  • Ta Owl will investigate

  • Has anyone been to Addis at the bottom of Cally road recently, or even semi-recently?

The last time I went must have been >10yr ago so just wanted to check if it was still any good.

    Cheers

(after some where in kings x rather than Ethiopiaan /Eritrean)

  • I went back to Luca recently. Not been since it got its star. Was meh for the price - which was about the same as two return flights to somewhere in Italy for lunch.

  • sacked off the black axe idea for lunch and spolied my self with yauatcha dim sum.

went years ago and was impressed with it the Standards are still high but the size of portion for glutinous rice in the leaf has shrunken in size dramatically, the cheung fun is still the best thing on the menu.

  • Would thoroughly recommend Polentina in Bow - really interesting Austrian-Italian fusion going on. Interesting location as well as it's part of a factory used by ApparelTasker

  • Haha, was reading the menu to my Aussie wife, excited about an antipodean twist 🥴

  • Likely to have a few hours to kill in Milan near Centrale station - does anyone have recommendations for good value places to eat and/or have an aperitivo or two? I’ll be on my own so casual is better

  • Any reccos for a pre-gig dinner in Camden? Casual Saturday night. Bit of a blank spot on my London food map.

  • Had the same dilemma before a gig at Jazz Cafe recently. Bit of a deadzone.

Maybe Edinboro Castle for a decent pub fish and chips kind of thing, and Namaste Kitchen is quite a good Indian for around there.

We actually ended up in The Parakeet in Kentish Town which was definitely on the fancier side of things. https://theparakeetpub.com/menu/

  • The Japanese in mornington crescent used to be great (although haven't been for years)

  • Just had a look and loads of the places I used to go to have closed down now.

There's https://kaisekiyokoya.co.uk/ but it's not really casual. Pizza Pilgrims would probably be where I'd head if I wanted somewhere nearby. I'd maybe head up to Kentish Town for something a bit better.

  • I also haven't been for years but have a strong feeling that it was taken over or something and isn't as good now.

  • That would be a shame! Not massively surprising though, it has been a few years
