  • Wolkite near the Arsenal stadium in Islington is probably the most highly regarded.

Merkato and Addis on Caledonian Road are good.

Hamer on Goldhawk Road (Shepherd's Bush) is really good and there are a few others round there that I've not tried.

Blue Nile in Woolwich is Eritrean rather than Ethiopian but it's also great, the restaurant itself is really interesting (it's in an old butchers with lots of the old fittings like the tiles and meat hooks) and the owners are lovely.

  • There's one in Camberwell called Zeret Kitchen. Not been but excellent reviews

  • Last time I tried to go to Zeret it was closed for refurbishment but good to know it was a good choice - this occasion is the stand in for that.

    Thanks for recommendations all.

  • Marathon on Caledonian Rd was recommended to me by Ethiopian friends several times

  • 2 questions when you ring up for takeaway.

    Meat or veg?
    How many people?

My kind of place! So good there

  • Missed the Ethiopian food chat but +1 for Zeret, she is really nice. If you are east go see Marcus in Gillett Square, Kaffa Coffee, tell them i sent you.

  • Best Jamaican food in London? I'm putting a vote for Pandaberry in Finchley. Do a banging curried chickpea and nice coconut with callaloo.

  • Just want to give > to Zeret, been there many times and it’s great :)

  • I know dim sum comes up occasionally - well new recco is Dim Sum and Duck in Kings Cross. It’s certainly as good as Royal China (if not better)

  • Is there many decent veggie things?

  • Well not tons tbh but honestly I didn’t really look for veggie options. Think their menu is online

  • Any recommendations for good, fancy vegetarian/pescetarian in south east/central?

  • Suggestions for a good steak place; central, City or east?

Ideally less than Hawksmoor money, not too fancy is preferable.

  • Not massively central but Entrecote?

  • Relais de venise

    Are they actually good?

always seemed bit suspicions to me but that's based on pure snobbery as I assumed theme park French bistro lite

  • is that the same as Relais de Venise?

  • two reccos and no menu; I could be sold.

  • I rated it and it fits your criteria.

Other steakhouse options are pretty meh (gaucho etc)

  • thanks; does look spot on for what i had in mind.

still can't quite shake the theme park vibe but i'm sure that's less of a problem in the actual place than their website. This is for Saturday and so would have to trek over to the Mayfair one as city branch is weekdays only.

  • Yeah.

It is what it is, but I really enjoyed it and it fits the bill.

  • It’s very hard to find this. It saddens me as my favourite treat is a good yum cha, but with a veggie wife, the experience just doesn't translate properly.

Glorious Steak. They have a restaurant off TCR and one in South Ken too.

Also, another vote for Relais de Venise. The fact that they bring the second half of your chips half way through your meal is a genius move.

  • New wife, or lies.

srsly though. It’s a shame that Chinese cuisine has some of the best vegan stuff around, but it’s not a dogma or hard rule so loads of stuff has pork mince or stock or something when it could easily do without. Not an option for the more hard line, but I tend to suspend my veg-forward diet when dim summing.

On that, Mao Chow on Mare Street (and now Box Park apparently) is vegan Chinese, and very fire.
