  • Lots and lots

  • Something fairly robust but with good mud clearance. There's still a lot of rubble buried just under the surface that can destroy a tyre.

  • Those planet x tubs might get bought tonight....

Would those Grifo be a terrible choice then? My ignorance in this area is profound.

Michelin Mud 2 with latex tubes?

The wheels are already setup for tubeless, which I'd be keen to try, just to add another element of confusion.

  • Grifos would be a fine choice, but there is a risk they'll get damaged at HH. This is probably true for any tyre though, it comes down to how pissed off you'd be if you had to replace one.

Most people I know who use tubs never run them at Herne Hill, as the chances of writing one off is higher than usual.

  • I've got muds. I won't be riding on them but only because my wheels are set up with Clement pdx and latex tubes.

  • I'd run mud tyres, but not at a super low pressure.

Annoyed, but I can always walk home in twenty minutes.

  • Ordered the Grifo, now I need a Santa hat. And about 12 months of regular cycling in my legs.

  • Yeeha. Now to persuade Ms Brookly Bay to join in.

  • Macclesfield supacross today. Nick Craig took veterans win, again, and senior was won by a guy called Bevvie, I think, close first couple of laps, then he just kept pulling away, and won comfortably. The course wasn't as muddy as I expected after the amount of rain we've had lately, couple of spills near the pit area, on a tricky corner, that starts downhill, crossed a tarmac path, then almost 90° onto grass/mud, one for the brave taking that one flat out.
All in all, a most enjoyable afternoons racing, just wished more had come to cheer on from the sides.

  • Ian Bibby perchance?

  • That's yer man. He is fookin quick.

  • Former national champion. So yeah, you'd expect him to be.

  • Ah, not well up on cx racers. That'd explain the huge gap though.

  • Anyone with a spare sram apex shifter for the rear derailleur (right hand one), or any 10speed sram sifter ?
you'd be my hero. Trying to get my bike fixed for the league on the 3rd.

  • @coldharbour has my two rival shifters that I guess aren't on a bike yet - you could hit him up for them.

  • If you're happy for me to wait to build your bike up till they get back @Howard I can probs drop them somewhere in south tomorrow...

  • The Griffo's have arrived - very shallow tread, are these genuinely good for mud or am I going to be visiting the scenery rather more rapidly than I had intended?

  • Tubs or clincher? Either way, they are an intermediate tyre that will cope with mud well enough. A proper mud tyre would be better, but would you use it enough to make the outlay worthwhile?

If you don't crash you're not trying hard enough.

  • Clincher

  • I'm so glad you said this. It's the confirmation I was looking for regarding: my crashing.

  • Urgent message to all. Due to the recent weather up here in Yorkshire, Ripley Castle CX has been cancelled on New Years Day. That's probably been a very hard decision for them to make.

If anyone from here is still coming up and wants to get out for a ride, road or CX, in the Peak District, give me a shout.

  • Having my Scoble moment trying to get a Challenge Grifo (clincher) mounted, someone please tell me a trick to get this onto the rim before I start crying with frustration?

  • Well, it's on - I've scratched my ENVE rim and punched the cassette in the process. Now I just need to stop this rather heavy bleeding.
