sam - there is an option we might want to look into. a train leaves blackfriars at 19:12 and arrives at 19:51. a train leaves victoria at 19:18 and arrives at 19:51 also. if this baby grows we could split into two
thoughts everyone
That 19:18 involves a change at Bromley South. Onto the Blackfriars service, so it would be a case of out of the frying pan into the fire!
I suppose it is possible for the Victoria crew to aim for the initially suggested train, i.e. the 19:10 then just wait at St Mary Cray for 15 mins for everyone else to appear. I'd be happy to.
In other news, I didn't realise but I'm doing a 72 mile bike ride for the Kent Air Ambulance the day before. I think my legs are going to be aching...

well spotted sam. are you thinking of recceing this again? how busy is that train do we know? i might go out on tuesday just to do some miles, familiarise myself with the route and check out the train.
dude you will be suffering! bring some home baking! -
• #582
I'm recceing with Ved tomorrow night as he asked me to! I think he's a bit pissed that he'll miss it because he'll be on holiday. Going for the same 19:09 train so will get a good idea what a week Tuesday will be like.
If anyone wants to join us then feel free!
My home baking only stretches as far as pizza, and I don't like them cold.

Last night's recce with Ved went well.
The train was not too busy at all. The handy bit is that it arrives from it's inward destination at 18:45, meaning we can all jump on early doors. It's only a 4 carriage job, but has one of those sections for disabled users. You could stick 4-5 bikes in there easy. The other handy part is that we will board and depart from the same side (this also includes the one stop at Bromley South), so a couple of bikes can go in each of the doorways on the opposite side.
This makes it sound like it will be busy, but it will be fine.
Saying all this, I am still totally up for the possibility of people also catching the train from Blackfriars that arrives in St Mary Cray 15 mins after the Victoria service. If the option is there, why not use it?
I may well still tinker with a small section, but for now I'll leave it to Ved to give you his thoughts on last night's route.
Oh, and BTW, I made a great call on the weather as it was a perfect night for bike riding!

Thanks again Sam for agreeing to do the ride with me last night. We were done before 10pm!
I don't want to spoil the ride for you but I will say the route has all the TNRC trademarks and more!
The train should be straightforward, just make sure you're the first on with the bikes so you can all get on the carriage with the disabled/bike space. So I'd advise getting there early. You can meet by the Cornish Pasty shop and Boots to satisfy all your pasty and pharmaceutical needs before the ride.
By catching the 19:09, you will get there before sunset and you will relish the peaceful and calming Kent countryside. But, relax whilst you can.
As twilight approaches the feel of the ride changes, the temperature drops and then it starts. Falling branches, total silence, a distant rustle. Then the screams. Oh the screams.... I am still haunted by the shrieks of an unseen monster so unfathomable it could not be of this Earth. Keep your eyes on the road though as you will need conserve your efforts for the ascents. Sam's chain also made some brutally high pitched noise, but I trust he will sort this before the ride.
The penultimate climb is tough and is comparable to anything found on the Surrey Hills.
The approach is quite unnerving. I took a photo on my camera phone last night (no post production) :
I wish you all good luck and bode you well for an unforgettable jaunt through the Kent countryside (of the undead).

That was no brutal noise. My bike was so happy it was singing to me.

Sam scared a whole field of cows with one gear change. FACT.
Ask jonny about Rickmansworth. He's already heard my thoughts on that matter.
