  • pretty soon guys this will be up and running again. watch this space for the first ride of the year.
for those who don't know; we are just a small group of riders who decided to get out at night after we did the dunwich dynamo. We try to get the most out of our expensive lights.
We will be riding in Surrey and jumping on the last train to get back into london. that's a hard ride but we will be doing essex and cambridgeshire rides and hopefully a quick blast into the chilterns.
generally we like to leave around 7pm and get home around midnight.

if anyone has any routes then feel free to make the suggestion

just note that you will need to know the ride very well as no one likes messing about with maps in the dark and missing trains home

keep your eyes on this space

    tim

  • Nice one Tim, I am looking forward to rolling those hills again with you guys. This space is being watched.

  • I'm looking forward to this too. Need to firm up the ride I was thinking of doing in from Kent.

  • Still hoping to make it out there at some point, though not being able to get out till about 8pm means I might be limited to hacking up the road to catch up with you all on one of your Essex jaunts.

But evenings should be free from late June to late September, for what it's worth.

  • nice one tim. let's hook up and ride on saturday and sort out the deets for this then.

  • Ohh Good, I would like to come along. I guess I will need some proper lights though and not just cat eye things?

  • i'm keen for as many of these as i can.

  • definitely interested as finding form slowly diminishing

  • I would be interested in this also... Just for my info (never been on any of the FGSS rides yet)... What sort of distance do you cover on a tuesday night ??

  • the surrey hills are approx 36 miles, but very tough especially fixed. otherwise it's about 40-50 miles. the restrictions are obviously work the next day, and getting back to london by train when needed.
all are welcome to come up with routes etc but as was mentioned before, they must be well known to at least one rider and sensible i.e. not in f**cking scotland

as for that first ride, i'll talk to jinny this saturday and find a suitable tuesday but the sooner the better.

  • sorry dude, that's a typo. jonny!

  • Thanks for the info. I will keep a eye on the thread for when the rides are on...

I know for sure I wont be doing the surrey hills on my fixed gear.... maybe next year.

  • I went round Regents Park last night. Now I know that having cabs drive past you with headlights blazing doesn't give your night vision a chance to kick in properly, but that Hope Vision 1 isn't ***that ***bright is it...

It was definitely adequate along with the torch on my helmet though. I ended up with the Hope pointing about 25m up the road, and the torch (with a bigger spill to the beam pattern) moving around within that 25m.

This was mainly because of the best point to mount it on my helmet, and the fact I was down in the drops the whole time, but it worked well for picking out holes and stuff anyway, and also for looking up and 'firing a warning shot' at peripheral vehicles.

    Meh.

  • looks great. i'll be there on the nights i don't have football. 46x16 doable or are most on geared?

  • If I ever make it out, I'll be geared, just because my winter training bike, which is also my turbo training bike, has diversified and is also now my night riding bike.

  • sorry dude, that's a typo. jonny!

    Jinny. lol!
Certainly how he's known on the Lower East Side.

Would like to see if I can keep up on one of these...

  • i promised myself a bit less polo and a bit more riding this year. im sure i'll be about.

  • Fuck that shiT!

  • I mean...
    High 5!

  • i gotta a bike that neeeeeedddds riding.

  • best thing is to sort the gearing suggestions out on here for each individual ride as and when. as for lights. the brighter the better.

  • greasy you will be alright on 46 x 16. many wouldn't. be good to have you out there dude, same to shins and shoots.

    love, jinny

  • did a rekky today in surrey with the jinster. needless to say it was hard work. apart from noticing how much fitness has gone over winter several other things came to our attention.

the roads are getting cut up, pretty badly in places, after the freeze and the thaw. much care is needed let alone at night.
there were still isolated pockets of pesky snow, including a freaky patch in the siding just outside the station where we usually have a pre-ride wazz. remarkably temperatures did seem to dip to sub zero from 6 degrees in the space of a metre or two. we noticed several lost dog posters attched to the gate. piss here at your own risk!

we are not sure when to kick this off as the weather is still a bit temperamental and we remember how difficult it got arranging last minute cancelations in october time. perhaps we need to come up with a decent communications plan/strategy. i still feel bad after james and martin made it all the way to stratford just to get hailed to pieces. on the other hand i need to get out regularly and loved riding with you people at night. hhhmmmm

actually that's not too many observations at all.

  • I've just looked up the forecast for Surrey and East Sussex for tomorrow and it looks great (we're doing a ride to Brighton). Do you think there'll still be a lot of ice and snow left?

I live up here in snowless North-east London--we hardly got any snow in the latest flurries.

  • it wasn't enough to worry about. but up on the hills there was slush and you could see snow in the fields and trees. just be cautious with the pot holes and the loose grit. enjoy the ride guys and say hello to devil's dyke / ditchling beacon for us
