just added 2cm to my stem and it makes a big difference.

Considering fitting some 'tache bars to my Raleigh frame, but wondering whether I will need to purchase a slightly shorter stem, say 10mm less, to compensate of the reach of the moustache bars when fitted?
Looking for advice and any experience from people who've done this before and converted from road bars to moustache.
If its any use I currently run a 100mm stem on the bike and the tache bars I have are Nittos.
Thanks, Ved.

Grant recommends a tall, short-reach setup for this bar, and who are we to disagree?

A cheap alternative is a set of North Road ("sit up and beg") bars, installed inverted. I use these on my commuter bike and they give a very comfortable ride. I installed a steep MTB stem and it works out beautifully.

Yeah that's what I've been reading.
North road bars are an option too. But all this chopping and changing is a godamn PITA.

i have a leaning tower of PITA for you

I have some moustache style touring bars on my geared Claud Butler. I fucking love them! They've completely changed the riding position and my attitude while riding that particular bike.
I'd recommend that.

i did this and kept the same stem, it was fine for me,
my position went from bullhorns - streched out on the bike, with a flatter back
to moustache, on the same stem, just meant my hands were back by about 20cm probably, with a 10cm stem, my hands were at the same height - but inline with the headset pretty much.i always think its good to change one part at a time, then if you want a shorter stem as well... go for it, although this exaggerates the action of the moustache bars by bringing them even closer.

My Allee bars on the Holdsworth feel great, I've got a 50mm stem on there... Probably gonna raise the stem a touch and move my saddle up and a bit further back but I'm talking 10mm max... Like Aidan says it really does change your attitude when you're riding, it's a much more relaxed experience, better for your back too...

That bike is awesome! :D

As you know Zed I have some similar bars, used in the drop (rather than rise) way 'round. As they have made the ride more upright, this has caused some problems for me with saddle position as I am putting more weight on there. I am thinking of going back to drops because of this. One thing to consider is the possibility that these bars will alter your riding position to be more prawn-like... so a shorter stem might actually make that more pronounced. Is the frame on the long side, for you? You tend to bend in a different part of the spine which may not be ideal, and that would be more apparent with a short stem.
I would try it with the stem you are currently using first. Change one thing at a time, as it were.
Oh yeah barber just said that too.^ -

Yeah that Il Milano stem has LOADS of rise on it Joe.
Nice bike BTW.

So Joe, is it better for your back walking a bike that has higher handlebars?
Kind of makes sense.

The Il Milano's on the Mercian, you spud... The Holdsworth's got a freebie 50mm GB on it... And shut up, James, you spanner...

Spud? Good dis'.

although, one thing i found - i couldnt ride brakeless with moustache bars, skidding in emergency was much more difficult to initiate from the upright and lay back position the bars give - and controlling a skid was harder, due to knees touching the bar ends !
might be ok on teenslains settup, but my bars were much lower relative to the saddle
-

^ Exactly why I put a brake on yesterday... Mr No-Brakes is dead...
-
• #96
yeah, i say that but i don't like brakeless on risers either, only really feel safe and in control on bullhorns due to the handposition - hurts my wrists to skid risers!

Thanks guys some interesting points to think about :)

It's "Allez", not Allee. They do dropouts, as featured on some Holdsworths and sold by Ceeway, but that's all I know.
