There is no scrutineering, and even obvious cheats can't be prevented from starting. It's up to somebody (competitor, official, random stranger) to lodge a protest with the event secretary.

Nope, not even for the one medium gear event I entered either. No roll out and no one looked at my chainring/sprocket combo to make a guess, they just assumed I wasn't cheating.

That 3cm rule is a bit tricky though isn't it? I can move my arms quite a long way back and forth, so does the 3cm rule apply to ALL those positions? If you're in breach of it and then slide your arms back are you now good to go or is your whole bike setup illegal? The MG thing is a bit different - running overgeared in a MG event is just pointless - why enter if your 'success' is a fraud? Aren't they just a bit if fun, like most amatuer racing?

I wouldn't call 130rpm+ for ~25 minutes 'fun', but yes, you're right.

You're breaking the rule if your elbows are more than 3cm in front of the steerer axis when you adopt a 'competitive position'. While 'competitive position' isn't defined, I think most people would take it to mean any position you adopt during an event to maximise speed at that instant, so you're not going to be disqualified for dodgy elbow positioning if you reach forward to grab a bottle from a hand-up, for instance.

130rpm+ for ~25 minutes
Is about 11.6 miles.

• #8608
That'll be be why it took me 26 1/2 minutes then.

just got home from Chelmer CC Hardriders 25.6, which was shortened to 23 due to a road closure. Managed a dissapointing 1h01m49s. Found it really tough going, cold, windy, hilly and had a chain off just before the final mile and felt sick on the final climb, but what really rubs in how unfit i am is that the winner did 50 minutes dead.

Winners time isn't that relevant, it all depends who it is. Back in 2010, I got beaten by 12:15 and 12:17 in 25s on successive weekends, but as it was Alex Dowsett and Wouter Sybrandy I was pretty relaxed about it :-)

It was Felix Barker of Cambridge University. I'm a rookie on the TT scene so i dont really know who anyone is tbh other than Dowsett, Bottrill and a couple others. I seem to have 2 styles to TT attendance. 1 is arrive nice and early after a well timed breakfast, slowly consuming an isotonic drink with a warm up-settle into a nice pace. 2 is panic panic, adjust bike, panic, get stressed, consume too little or too much of everything and arrive at the start line out of breath with the countdown already going. Today was the latter hehe.

Medium gear events sound fun. I even already have a 72" set up. But my club doesn't do any. Does anyone know of anything near Cambridge?
-
• #8613
They're not
-
• #8614
Oh. Are you sure? Maybe they are and you're just grumpy?
-
• #8615
There's one very effective way of finding out. You don't need an mg event to ride mg BTW.
-
• #8616
I'm only grumpy cos Tester beat me last year, but he only did cos he used some sort of weird deviant science.
They're such a different kind of pain to regular TTs.

To be fair, though, I did have to cheat. You could always do this to your S75s if it bothers you:

Make them start. Just challenge people to ride MG in one of your existing club events. Preferably a 25, I don't entirely approve of our championship being contested over a sprint.

Sigmasport are now stocking* Velotoze
*see what I did there?

Good point. I'll ask. However, in the few events I managed to get to last year I was the only one riding fixed wheel, so I'm not sure what the appetite would be...

Ely does one of their/our Tuesday evening club TTs as a medium gear race.

I'm in if you are...
raising the question have any of you ever had anything measured for compliance at a Time trial?
