Based on some other riders power figures when racing me (same weight, but quicker), I can hold about the same wattage over 2min (if predominantly out of the saddle), but I'm about 2/3 of hippy's weight. So theoretically, I should be hitting the sub 1m30 mark for that climb, if gear choice worked out, and I was 5 years younger. Not so sure these days.
Great blog entry - you've definitely 'been there' :D

Isn't BringMeMyFix a woman? Hippy keeps saying 'he' - Confused

She is a He
That name has confused many a TT organiser. Its with 2 Ts.
He's also a demon on a fixed up a hill.

I guess then you need to lose about 40% of your body mass - hmmmmmm
(obviously directed at Hippy)

Who's Scarlett then?????I have 3 Powertap units now. They are special hubs that measure your power output and send them to a funny little yellow cpu on your bars (as willo highlighted).
Boys name..

We should get you on one of my bikes and measure your output.

wow, so you've got a specially built wheel? Looks and is incredibly expensive.
I'd love one but will wait for the price to drop, be good to hook it up to a Garmin

don't be fooled; it's a calorie counter / pie detector

Yep. Thanks to Scherrit..
http://www.thehippy.net/nucleus/index.php?itemid=1378Probably the best bang for buck unit available (for roadies at least). Trackies have a harder time. You can convert them to fixed (as above) but they have limited life span and probably limit your drilling options. SRMs seem far more popular on the track, are a bit more accurate but far more expensive.

If you can wait til next year, there's a new "relatively" inexpensive power meter (read; about the same as a powertap) which fits into speedplay pedals and will be Ant+ compatible.

It's weird doing a sudden switch from training with a slow cadence (50-70) standing focus, to seated high cadence for slow twitch (110-130) / high cadence for fast twitch (160->200).
10 days of it, and I can already feel the slow cadence/standing powers diminishing. That's specificity for ya.
It's going to take a while for my undercarriage to adapt too.
*but I'm enjoying the eating with abandon aspect :)

It's more than that though. There could be all sorts of issues with the new product.
Since PT has been out for ages its flaws are known and things like Training Peaks (best sw for use with power meter) works with it. You are also limited with pedal choice, etc. Basically, I wouldn't be rushing into one of those pedal-based systems until quite a way into their life.. once most of the flaws are ironed out, they work with Trainint Peaks and they work with SPD-SL. I love the idea though. -

In fact (whilst I'm posting out of sync), if I can eat enough to gain 30kg, hippy's hillclimb crown will be eternally safe.

My eating crown is definitely safe.

If they are Ant+ enabled they will be compatible with Training Peaks. For me, they have the attraction that I can easily swap between training and race wheels, and move between bikes more easily than with a SRM.

Think we're still some way away from having a cheap consumer based power meter yet though. The way forward is to probably intregrate them into the electronic gear systems.
Sure this could be done easily and once the technology triggles down...

I'm one week into the turbo sessions. I was certain that the SLR was the saddle for me prior to this!
Need to think about alternatives soon if things don't start to improve.

More obsessive geeks like me need to go out and buy power meters.
A few years ago I wouldn't have even considered buying one, given their costs, now I'm swimming in yellow computers.. -

Need to think about alternatives soon if things don't start to improve.Throw in a bit more standing up.. I find any saddle annoying during turbo. I think you become more static on the bike for some reason. Since you're no longer cornering or anything you just focus on the intervals and forget about moving. So, yeah, stand up between intervals (if you can :)).

I did try to stand up last night, very briefly. Bike wobbled. Rear skewer turbo connection groaned.
I sat down pronto with visions of myself in bibshorts and a heart rate strap being propelled out of the living room window having t-boned the sofa at 20mph.
Think the recovery thing comes from lack of training - sounds very similar to a 10m TT that my wife entered me for back in September. I did no specific training; average heart rate was 181 with a peak of 189 (to put this into perspective when I was assessed on a SRM Scientific with a proper ramp test, I topped out at 186 after 12 mins).
I am sure that if I had done some training (like 2 weeks or so of specific training) I would have been slower!
Rebecca commented afterwards that she had never seen anyone just sit down and look "lost" for so long after a race!
587W over 2 mins is seriously impressive! My assessment saw a peak one minute average of 412W. I'm probably a little older than you - however, I was told that this was a very good score for someone of my age and would put me at Cat 2 level with the appropriate fitness and race craft! That was before losing the weight that he advised me I should be doing....
