  • MDCC was on the mark. Those halos are normal kinda thing with still, relatively large frontal area.

  • Bad accident at Bexley 10 last night, not sure who/which team they were from I just hope they're OK.

I was no.17 off the line and there was about 6 or so riders who had already stopped to attend plus a van (not sure if the van was involved at all). Bloody windy out there and it was a bit hairy going down the hill. I think most people wrote it off for chasing times after that, just didn't feel right.

  • Pretty sure that was Debbie from my Tri Club, she posted a pic of her skin suit with a lot of holes in, apart from road rash and bruising she is fine, mate.

Good to hear, didn't see any of the accident myself, just the aftermath which was enough to put anyone off. Scary times.

Any idea what actually happened, was it an incident with a vehicle or just the wind blowing her into the verge?

  • Tuesday it is, going to be working later than expected tonight...

Her FB post says her back wheel popped out after going over a bump.

Fortunately, she's ok, and aims to be racing this weekend.

  • It's M6 already or you then tapped the ends to M6?
Put the 2 countersunk screws each side for spacing?
Then the cupwasher, to put a Allen key bolt into?

You need to tap the thread into the bore of the axle, which is conveniently already almost exactly the correct size for an M6 pilot bore. Then you need 2-off M6×20mm 12.9 grade countersunk socket cap machine screws, 2-off cup washers and a 4mm Allen key in your tool bag.

  • Ah, yes, that makes simple sense, when looking at it. So all I need to do is to tap the iside of the axel and then get those 2 other parts.

They've only 15mm or 25mm length? 25mm too long? Or cut it down?

  • Get the screws from your local fastener shop, they will be much cheaper.

The main reason for getting 12.9 grade steel is not the shank strength, for which almost any grade is good enough, but because the 4mm socket is quite small so it tends to round out on softer grade screws.

  • Ah yes, always rounding things out.
And I'd have no idea where a fastener shop is near me, googled but results were slim.
Any easy way to find one?

    Where are you?

  • Streatham
Or as I'd say. Saint Retham. Sounds more upper brow.

I have a feeling this could be the lady who, after warming up in the carpark on a turbo, rode off to the start and forgot to put her skewer back into the wheel. Her wheel came out after a few meters and she returned to the car to fit said skewer...

Lots of catching up to do... today is Thursday ;)

If you can't find the right screws locally, I can post you some from my local shop.

    Oops.

Can we do the 2nd option, if it's not hassle? When would you next be going by your shop?

Can you recommend a reasonable priced <£30 tap & die set that'll be decent enough?

    Thanks.

  • Which wheels? Steel QR axles will take an M6 tap, then you just need a couple of countersunk screws (I use 12.9 grade, because why not?) and some cup washers, see http://www.lfgss.com/post2788491-110.html for an illustration

    Very neat!

  • I may also have a go a this, Tstr do you have a tap which I might be able to borrow?

  • Tstr do you have a tap which I might be able to borrow?

Yes, but what axle is in your Hed? It won't work with the modern aluminium axle versions because there's not much metal to cut into due to the 5mm Allen key sockets and the hollow end cap design.

If you're just doing a couple of axles, pretty much anything will work. You should get a set of M6 taps (taper lead and bottoming) and a tap wrench to hold them. Mine came from RS about a million years ago, e.g.
