    1. The season never really ends. Usually the first events of the year are in January and February and are on slower, tougher courses. Events are run through to October/November with some 'fun' events at Christmas.

    2. Some events are open to non-cycling club members but usually being a member of an CTT affiliated club is required.

    3. Most events have a separate prize list for women but they are run as mixed events.

    cheers Andy.

I now have a non-smoking habit, a motivational skinsuit and a can-do attitude. And the cycle coach from Surrey league has just emailed me about women's race days this winter. 2010 is raceyear. rar.

  • So are there any/many TT's after Sept?

  • So are there any/many TT's after Sept?

Not many; eligibility for the season long BAR competitions ends on 30th Sept, daylight gets in short supply given that we have to start early to avoid high traffic volume on many courses, and we've all had enough by September! The Hill Climb season really gets going in October, but ends this year on Nov 1st. Effectively, the last standard distance open TT of the season is my club's 25 on October 25th, but there are a few 10s in December aimed more at sociability than sport.

Is that course relatively near London? I'm in Highbury

  • A couple of clubs will offer a Winter 10 series for the non CX crowd. Usually first Saterday of the month thing until the traditional spring hardriders.

No, it's in Sussex, so the wrong side too. On the other hand, there is a separate race for people without derailleurs (fixed, singlespeed and Sturmey-Archer), and there may be prizes for fixed. The course is vaguely sporting, but nothing too serious; rolling, rather than hilly. I've done it on 85" fixed with no trouble, and Ray Hughes did a 59 on 72" a couple of years ago. If anybody is interested, I'll ask Robin about fixed prize details and post them here.

  • Went out on the bike to test this gearing for next week's possible TT. Spend the first 3 or so miles getting a decent hand position where I could also lay my wrists across the bars. Didn't give it 100%, but certainly had to near the end as it was into a stiff breeze.

Anyway, I stopped the clock at 25-49. Fairly happy with that, and under competition next week I'm sort of confident that I could shave 50 seconds off to get under 25 mins.

  • Think you need a modern lightweight bike for time trials? Think again! This bloke did 29:32 at last night's MDCC 10, on a course which is a good 2 minutes slower than even a fairly decent one, on a really crappy night. It's from 1928, weighs a ton but lovely smooth ride with the big wheels and balloon tyres. And yes, he did race dressed like that.

  • That looks like a good way to make TTs fun :)

  • It was a bit of a vintage fest on Thursday, my 1992 Brian Rourke looked modern next to the 50s/60s Rotrax which won the medium gear trophy and Gurpal's 1970s Raleigh

  • Did he do it all the way round in black and white?

Takes some doing, i did the last evening 10 at Navestock on fri, thought i was flying and did a 28 :<

  • After 16 years, and subject to ratification, Chris Boardman no longer holds the Blue Riband record of British time trialling.
Port Talbot Wheelers 25 today won by Dave McCann in 45:54, on the ridiculously quick Resolven course. Fourteen riders inside 50:00, obviously including Dr Hutch who was once more within seconds of Boardman's mark, but will now never have the honour of knocking the mighty Chreeeeees off the top of the rankings.

  • Oh, Hutchinson was beaten? That's a fairly rare occurrence. Well done to the winner and new record holder. Now, what would Brad Wiggins do? :)

  • More important, what would I have done? I haven't got under since I came back to time trialling, but a bloke I've regularly beaten by over a minute in 10s this year did a 57 today. F'ed if I'm going to Wales for a fast ride, but it puts the course into perspective.

  • Oh, and for this forum: fixed is no longer fastest.

Re Hutch: "I reckon he just had a bad day or bad form. He was the only sub 50 minute rider NOT to do a PB, and actually went back a few seconds on his ride on the same course 4 weeks ago held is less favourable conditions"

  • Re Hutch How annoying must that have been?

  • Can't believe they're not letting him ride the Worlds TT with Bradley Wiggins, would be interesting to see how he would have done.

All because he's not an overseas rider

  • He'd have his arse handed to him on a plate if he rode it, there's a massive difference between riding on UK time trialling courses on major roads with lots of traffic to assist and riding the World Championships. He's done some events in Europe before and finished well down the field. Back when Stuart Dangerfield was top of the pile in the UK he'd always campaign to go to the Worlds, then get a time trialling lesson from the top professional riders.

  • Yeah, remeber that and he may get his arse kicked but who out of all the other people selected can time trial as well as Hutch? Ok they may be better road riders but if we could select 2 for the tt surely we should select our top 2?

It kinda makes a mockery of british timetrialling, that it's not proper racing and for old men with beards

  • Re Hutch How annoying must that have been?

  • Oh, and for this forum: fixed is no longer fastest.

For you maybe, my clubmate Dave Marshall kept on at me to try gears and set up his Raleigh Ti Proffessional 14spd for me and I rode the Sussex/Surrey VTTA 25TT last Sunday, I rode 1:09:50 even taking in to account the wrong turn that aded 40 seconds that is stil four minutes slower than I rode on the Challock course which is hillier :(

I thinkk to be fair I would need to ride one longer to get used to it again, that was my first geared ride for five years :)

  • For you maybe

I'm moving towards better times on fixed, but I'm still a way behind what I did on gears in my youth at 10 and 25. I'm not about to switch back to geared bikes just because they're faster, but few people doubt that they are, except on the very few courses where you really do only need one gear all the way around.

Given the struggle Boardman had on the downhill start when he set the old record, he might now be kicking himself that he didn't use gears that day, it would surely have kept him on top of the list for another few years if he had.

  • I rode the Sussex/Surrey VTTA 25TT last Sunday

Are you going to ride the Mitre 25 on Oct. 25th? Come and say hello if you do, I'll be sat with the timekeeper at the finish.
