  • Any thoughts on the H25/8? I'm thinking of coming over for either the Farnham event on the 13th July or the Hounslow event on the 21st July.

  • What do you want to know about it?

  • Is it a nice course? I'm not looking for a drag strip to hunt for PBs, I'd be better off training harder, are things like the surface alright and is it heaving with dangerous traffic? It's not excessive but it's a of a trek to get to.

Also, I've only done club races in the past so I'm a bit daunted about signing up to an open and whether it's likely to be oversubscribed. The Farnham event on the 16th looked like a big event to me but I'm not so sure about the Hounslow version. I should probably just HTFU and enter (probably on the 21st).

  • Course is pretty smooth, no big bumps or potholes just a bit of fairly fine grade chipseal in mile 2 & 17, very low traffic in the morning (I rode the 50 last Sunday without touching the brakes once), although the Farnham turn can get a bit busy in afternoon events

Events on there are rarely over-subscribed, you'll easily get a ride with your qualifying time

  • After months of procrastination and excuses I finally made my first TT last night on the slightly bumpy HCC083. Went surprisingly well all things considered. I did pluck up the courage last week but it wasn't on, so Hippy was proved right about the effect of pinning a number on your back as I managed to knock about 30 seconds off what my unofficial Strava segment time showed from last week.

I did get some mild teasing on the line from timekeeper about my wimpy 65" and I think he might have been right as while it was nice on the upslopes it was a bit twiddly at times on the way back downhill with the wind behind me.

  • OK, we've heard your excuses, now tell us what time you did :-)

  • LOL! It was 31.04 which was easily the slowest of the evening. Now I'm going to have to HTFU and put some effort in to get that below 30.

  • It was windy and you were undergeared. Put 72" on and get a half decent night and you'll be under 30:00 easily.

  • Thanks, that pretty much fits with the advice that the timekeeper had after the event as we chatted about how he used to run fixed.

  • Balls, I just checked and I'm running 75" - my memory is really shit. Now I have no excuses!

  • Any thoughts on the H25/8? I'm thinking of coming over for either the Farnham event on the 13th July or the Hounslow event on the 21st July.

It can be a bit rutted at the southern end I think (if it goes as far as the 100 does). It helps to arrive early and not miss the start...

My PB on that course is a 56:16, winner did 51:04.

  • so Hippy was proved right

    hippy is always right.

    well done on the pb

  • Hutch toppled from the National 25 #1 by Joe Perrett..

It doesn't; the 25 misses out in the unpleasant bit which is part of the 50 and 100 courses

  • Balls, I just checked and I'm running 75"

I would use 75" if I didn't think I was going to get under 27:00, but you have to find your own gear by experiment. From talking to other FG testers, average cadence can end up anywhere from 65 to 105rpm for people who have optimised for minimised elapsed time. I'm right in the middle with 80rpm feeling hugely over geared and 90rpm feeling too spinny.

  • It doesn't; the 25 misses out in the unpleasant bit which is part of the 50 and 100 courses

Right. I knew they differed but couldn't remember where the turn was.
In that case the northern bit is fine. Like you said the roundabout has stopped me dead sometimes and there's some annoying bumps/hillocks that I'm usually out of the saddle for but it's pretty good.

  • Are there any recent tyre rolling resistance charts available? Obviously trying to squeeze some more speed out of my setup I'm thinking about trying to get something faster than the quite huge 25mm Pro Optimums I use. They still need to be durable and comfortable for longer TTs. Maybe 25mm Pro4 if they exist?

  • LOL! It was 31.04 which was easily the slowest of the evening. Now I'm going to have to HTFU and put some effort in to get that below 30.

The Valley End 10 course (HCC 83) is exceptionally slow. Don't give up, but look forward to the near certainty of a p.b. next time.

  • Are there any recent tyre rolling resistance charts available?

AFM9 is the latest, from 2010. Vittoria Open Corsa Evo CX looks to be the fastest tyre that's also available in a 25C. I don't think they're as chubby as Mich Pro Optimums, but they were over 25mm on my skinny rims so probably about 27mm if you have 23mm rims.

  • Yeah, I went through that the other day and wondered if there was a newer one that took into account the new trend for wider rims and tyres. Good news is the Pro Optimum rear fits without issue into a Shiv. I've been running Vittoria Open Corsa Evo KX 23mm for a while now, just on the front for the shorter races.

  • Club has mentioned some evening 10s..
    Date Time Course
    July 3rd 19.45 H10/2
    July 10th 19.45 H10/2
    July 18th 19.30 H10/4
    July 25th 19.30 H10/4

Which course is faster? I might swap a turbo session for a 10.

  • Ok so the initial fear of the long haired general seeing these has gone, and I'm bloody excited.

They've got conti gp4000 tubs in good nick and dura ace cassette on them, I'm going to pick them up this week!

My speed can in no way justify them, but I'm training my arse off at the moment (quite literally) and hopefully they'll spur me on to get out on the bike a bit more, the only problem is I don't think I can justify buying a new road bike now...

  • Hhsb thread>>>>>>>>

Seriously though, those are a bargain.

  • KCA 100mile TT Q100 course on Raleigh Team Professional 531C 86" fixed 48 x 15
All though I have ridden 100miles loads before this was my first this year and first 100TT

Chaos should be my middle name after leaving my bike rack keys in my toolbox at work eventually found the spare set and got to the start already 20mins past my start time. got everything together and just saw Paul Mepham driving back so he returned to the start and gave me a 40min late start. That wind is always grief down there and I suffered with my lack of training but happy with a PB at 100 miles by 25mins with 5h 0min 24 sec but gutted it wasn't under 5h, Garmin still said evens 20mph average
My previous best was the first 100miles of the 12hour in 2007 5h 25mins
