  • Had another crack at a 10 miler yesterday - my second effort, but first fixed. I'm still yet to finish though.

I've begun to adjust my opinion on what makes for a satisfactory ride, and how I get the most reward from riding. I've tried all this pushing myself lark, measuring times/distances for the glee of marginal improvement, and all very interesting it was. Recently though I've taken to riding an alternative 10 mile route well within capacity, never pushing any limits, instead feeling the reward of riding the distance with everything still left in reserve - my ulterior motive being that this will teach a novice like me discipline, and make clear what my comfort levels are, to then try and go above them once they've been established.

After a few turns of this, so with a reasonable idea of what I have in reserve when needing to push, off I rode to the start line yesterday - not competitively I might add. I don't have any device on my fixed bike but have a sense of what maintaining 20mph+ feels like, although I need to improve in remaining on its cusp. I reached the 5 mile turn dead on 15 minutes - my aim is to crack half an hour come the end - but then I slumped for about a mile. This time though I recovered quickly (all things being relative) in comparison to my first attempt and found I could press on again much sooner. This is improvement, and I think due to the experiments with doing nothing but steady rides over the distance - only trouble is the second road, after the turn, is not as conducive to speed as the first. It's a different challenge, with a poor surface.

At the final turn, 7.5 miles in, I was dead-on 25 minutes. Not good enough for 30 total. I'm quite certain I can eliminate that first slump altogether without much of a decrease in speed along the first road, as I feel it was psychological more than physical; I estimate it cost me 3 minutes. If I can reach this turn in about 22/23 minutes, then the last stretch, mostly slightly uphill, can be reached before the half hour elapses. Instead I sat on a pretty bench, had a smoke and found I recovered again very quickly, rather than it being a drawn out process as it had been when I tried on my road-bike first time around. My breathing was not frantic, and I was barely sweating.

So it's all very fascinating, pitting my OCD against measurables/challenging immovables, but I'm yet again testing myself under the pretence of preferring to ride steadily. But I'm interested in the discipline side of a TT, as mentioned, and the mechanics of sustaining a pace/recovering quickly when it drops and all the other groovy things which will eventually see me get under 30 minutes - when I actually finish one, that is. It is a good, and achievable, target.

  • 55:33 in the Didcot Phoenix H25/17 today.

Would you like me to correct the forum BAR table, or will you do it?

    It's ok, I'll do it :)

  • Guess what place?

  • Last?

  • Smartarse. 2nd, of course!

  • Guess what place?

In the Fixed-gear and Single-speed BAR? Nowhere, you have no qualifying rides.

  • Oh noes! However will I cope?!

  • Unless fwn does a 50 it looks like you will be the winner.. but you'll also be last.

  • 2nd, of course!

Yes, I am disappoint; I thought a few more fixengers might htfu, or at least you might have ridden a set of WLC 10/25/50 on fixed just for laughs.

fwn either needs improved 10 & 25 times or a 50 time of around 1:41:00 to overhaul me.

  • It would mean a new bike or taking the Condor out and it's cracked so I don't do more than shopping trips on it these days (and it's not setup for midfoot).

I'm only doing the shorter stuff since spending so much time on the TT bike I find I PB everything afterwards anyway. Next year I'll probably aim for the 12hr record and have a crack at a (better) BBAR place. Maybe after that I'll think about fixed TTing.

  • I did a 10 on fixed this summer in a long 24. Kinda shit really.

Haven't ridden as many TTs this year as I would have liked, that's having a young family for you. Hopefully we can run the forum BBAR next year too :0)

With any luck more than one person will actually complete all the distances!

  • Hutch got the 25 @ 45:46

  • I have failed to get a 50 in too, never mind a fixed one.

    'bout time.

Nice little combo with the 10 he got the other week too the fast bastard!

After 18 months away from any serious* biking I'm just getting back into it properly* now. Next year I'll definitely complete all distances geared but only my commuter is fixed atm. If someone wants to find me a sub £100 frame with similar geometry to a P2 then I'd give it a crack. If not, does it count if I just promise not to change gear ;-)?

  • From the Road Racing thread.. classic..

    ^^This, and this again.

As a light aside, is this the best photo from a TT you've seen? http://markghopkins.co.uk/p481998606/h4216d338#h4216d338

Aero seriousness...Aero seriousness...Aero seriousness...Ahh fuck it I can't hold this tuck forever anyway

  • Timing's on the third man, eh?

Chest infection fucked me up for months spent almost eight weeks off the bike, during that were the 50's I was supposed to ride.

MDCC if I could ride 1:41:00 for a fifty I would be a very happy man :D
Since I have been back on the bike I have ridden a couple of Gravesend evening 10s on a shortened course that would have equated to approx 24:05 and a Crawley CC evening 10 where an extra roundabout had me do an 11mile TT "Doh" Never mind 36 laps Dammit I couldn't count 6 fekkin roundabouts.
We have a club 10 Sunday morning at Knockholt station.

  • Finally won an event.

21:35 new 10mi PB by 2.5 minutes on the crusty Amersham Rd course.

  • Now you're really not Aussie any more.

    Well done!
