Thanks for the advise people :D
I'm actually only going to spend only the money I make from selling bike parts - so far £8 hahaha
Yeah I really enjoyed it, Lycra and the bike in light weight mode next time :) sub 30 is the obvious first aim, then see how we go.
Will tri bars actually make that much of a difference? Or would warmer Lycra instead of jeans and a hoodie? Although I could convince my mum to get me Lycra and me pay for tri bars.........
-
• #2103
Tri bars will make a much bigger difference than you think, apparently 1/2mph if you are going at 'time trial pace', and so will lycra, not noticeable in speed, but the comfort and breathabilty will all ad up, i guarantee youll get sub 30 if you use lycra and tri bars.
also, remember not to go out too hard! -

Aerobars make a difference if you are in a position on them to reduce your frontal area whilst still being able to generate good power. Some people have rubbish positions on aerobars and would probably do better on lower drops.
Yeah they will generally make a difference but I almost PBd my 10mi time on my road bike arsing about after riding it numerous times on my TT bike.
Lycra before tri bars definitely. -
• #2105
Only one other person was there doing it on a road bike with no clip-ons, everyone else was worryingly serious =/
In that case I'd best not show you the reincarnation of the Olmo...
-
• #2106
Please do :) I'm gradually working up to heading out and doing it on the tt fixed, but still not comfortable in my ability to spin it back to the start at 40mph on gear of choice =/

Position, which includes tri bars, makes more difference than anything else. However, at this stage you're only racing against yourself, so none of it matters.

Lycra before tri bars definitely.
Probably this, because the benefits of lycra are much more than just the go faster stripes.

I did a couple of local TTs last year (fixed) and have just done my 3rd of 2012. My best 10 mile time is 25:07.

It is possible that some of you here have not noticed the thread with the above title which is in the General Forum.
The proposal is that the Forum should have it's own BAR competition. MDCC Tester suggests, correctly I think, that it would be better to move the discussion to this forum. So if you haven't read the thread already, have a look at what's been said and put any comments into this thread.

Count me in if it's for 10, 25 and 50 (or any two of those distances).
Usual dodgy BAR maths or simple aggregate time?
Open events only, or club events too now that most clubs publish results on line?
As this is LFGSS, I'd suggest keeping track of who is on fixed too.

A discussion is needed about what people want.
My own views:
I'd be in favour of the best average speed for what ever set of distances are agreed on, but this is not something I care deeply about.
I feel that a BAR which did not include at least a 50 wouldn't be worth bothering with.
I don't see any problem with club events.
Since this is lfgss, maybe the competiton should be restricted to rides done on fixed or ss. Alternatively there might be two classes fixed and geared, but this really assumes a reasonable number of entrants.
Some one, preferably not me, would have to undertake to organise a prize presentation meeting (which obviously would require the other sort of bar).

Aye, and there's the rub. The traditional BAR calculation doesn't yield an average speed, it gives a score in arbitrary units which are incorrectly reported as being in mph :-)

As this is LFGSS, it should consist of a 10 mile, 25 mile, and 5 mile urban brklss.
50 miles is just tedious.

How would this work? Do you have a certain period to obtain results, then use your best time at each distance? Or do you have to pick one race at each distance for your results?
-

Best time at each distance at recognised events between April and October usually?

September 30th is the traditional last day for BAR performances.
I know Clubman will think we're a bunch of big girls' blouses for not including 100, whereas it's clear that it's hard enough to get some noobs to consider a 25 a short distance TT, so as a compromise let's assume it's 10,25 and 50, best time at each distance from April 1st to September 30th 2012 inclusive to count, any event with verifiable results run under CTT regulation, usual dodgy BAR maths so your score is
((10/tenmiletime)+(25/twentyfivemiletime)+(50/fiftymiletime))/3
and start a list to see how many people will submit claims under those conditions. Put your name down and state whether you'll be racing on fixed or cheating :-)- mdcc_tester - fixed

The furthest I've ever ridden in one go is 100mi so bugger doing that for a TT.

Just ride round and get a time, set off about at 90% of 25 mile effort and take a drink and a gel to top you up half way.
^^Just sub-25mins I think. Maybe bang on. It was wet, and a straight headwind on the return leg. Only concession to aero was 50mm rims, done on my normal road bike this time. Went just to clock up the miles on the ride in and out so quite pleased with it really.
