  • so was hayes's retirement just a synical money grabbing ploy ?

  • Clearly. Because now he's sniffing around the other brother for a tear-up that he won't have a broken toe for.

  • If Haye v. Vitali K comes off it will be the end of Haye's career. It will also very likely be the second time in his career he'll be stopped but probably a lot more conclusively than Thompson managed.

  • Unbearable individual.

  • There was a great doc on ITV last night - The Fight of their Lives covering the tragic Nigel Benn v Mclellan fight. It was really expertly put together and very moving - I was close to tears when I saw the re-union 12 years after the fight that left McLellan almost a paraplegic at a fundraiser Benn had organised to help with his living costs.

It was also a deeply honest film - contrasting the lunacy of McLellan's corner with the reflective modern day Nigel Benn and expert opinion of commentators, boxers and trainers. And at the same time it managed to be thrilling - the fight was a raw, brutal affair, never again shown on TV, both men unwilling to lose and an outcome no one would have predicted. In short it was all that is good about boxing and all that is bad.

Redemptive, frightening and deeply moving, I'd recommend it to anyone with or without an interest and also as a documentary free from sensationalism that really get's to the core of the sport.

The young surgeon that treated McLellan immediately after the fight at the Royal London is also notable for his quiet, criticism of boxing. When asked how Mclellan is he replies:

"His brain was quite swollen, how we would expect it to look after it's been punched for ten rounds"

A really worthwhile film, on the itv iplayer at the mo

  • this morning I woke up to the bbc spouting facts and figures and sound bites from Mohammad Ali's life. My motivation for getting up was to hear the rest. The first thing i said to the Norwegian was "is Ali dead?"
    No. its his birthday.
Amazing to hear he is still cited in boxing as an influence on this generation.

  • um am i missing something with the amir khan fight

surely there is video coverage of the fight
there is still talk of the fight being a " bit dodge "

can't they just replay the video and get some random judges / boxing commentators to re mark the fight and see what result they come out with
if same then fine, if different points scoring then they can order the re match

it's not like a bear shitting in the woods or a tree falling with no one around to hear it where they don't have any footage of the fight at all

or is the sport as corrupt and dodgy as we all think

As corrupt and dodgy as football for example or cricket? Yes absolutely. Khan won the Peterson fight but whether or not that's what the record will ever show is a different matter.

  • wow so the global opinion is that khan won but the boxing authorities won't change a thing ?
    just order a re match

    SHAME

  • Scandal in Boxing? Don King must be involved somewhere in this all this mess.

  • You should read this for a laugh - [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Life-Crimes-Don-King-America/dp/0974020109"]The Life and Crimes of Don King: The Shame of Boxing in America: Amazon.co.uk: Jack Newfield: 9780974020105: Books[/ame]

There are a couple of good Telegraph article about what happened. Basically there are 2 belts at stake, WBA and IBF. The WBA have ordered a rematch based on questionable decision making / scoring on the night. However, the IBF hearing folded because a key witness has gone to ground and can't be made to testify. So without a decision from the IBF it's stalemate.

Khan is trying to tempt Peterson out with a 50/50 split on a rematch. I'm not sure it'll happen though, I think Peterson realises he's onto a good thing and a rematch with an on form and fired up Khan would be a very unattractive prospect.

  • He'll lose his belt if he doesn't agree to a rematch and Khan will be the interim title holder and fight a second rate challenger for far less money so everyone is a loser.

In all fairness the fight was a farce and should never have been held in DC, I thought it was surprising that Golden Boy agreed to the fight being held there.

  • is dc reknowned for being " dodge " ?

  • Hometown advantage and according to Bunce and Hubbard the DC commissions are not experienced in hosting high profile fights.

  • RIP Angelo Dundee. Member of the Boxing hall of fame and probably the greatest trainer ever. http://clikhear.palmbeachpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/095.jpg

  • It's a sad thing to happen, just had his fifth street gym back up and running, flies out for the birthday for his old protege and develops a blood clot and passes away.

  • And Goody Petronelli a few days before.

  • RIP Mr Dundee - crafted kids into legends.

  • Best trainer ever but robbed Henry Cooper - FACT!

  • A master of mindgames, as well as a great trainer, you saw potential in everyone and everything. Those under your tutelage owe so much to your vision. When you spoke everybody listened.

    RIP Angelo Dundee

  • Today is not a day to bear grudges and I'm sure Sir 'Enry is welcoming him with open arms in that boxing ring up in the clouds.

  • Cooper wouldn't have won that fight. Clay only had to breathe on him and the claret would've started flowing.
