  • Should not have watched the Paul v Fury press conference, will now end up watching the fight. Oh well.

  • Just read the script, it should be available prior to the 'fight', thus saving you the tedium of watching two celebs playing at boxing.

  • This stinks of the classic even a broken watch can tell the right time.
Every time Paul has stepped up towards what people have supposedly wanted it’ll be the fight that ends him.
I’ve, like you, no idea if anything of it is really stage or scripted but he seems pretty committed to boxing and is certainly drawing attention.
Seem to be a lot of wanna be gate keepers.

  • I'm intrigued but won't watch. There are some interesting questions. Why would Paul risk what he has built by fighting an actual boxer? Why would Fury take a dive? If Fury dives, does it mean he is giving up on boxing? The Fury's play games when setting up a fight, could they fuck Paul over by not carrying him and just humiliate him? Can Paul actually beat a real boxer?

It's a clown show that I hope ends in total humiliation for Paul but from a numbers point of view there is a non zero chance that Paul has the ability to be a decent pro boxer. He has the opportunity and motivation so it is not impossible that he makes it. V unlikely tho.

  • They're not fixed he's just been very clever with who he fights. People just assume Paul's an absolute bum but he's got some decent ability and power. Now he's nowhere near elite level but I reckon there's plenty of lower level journeymen pros he could beat, but he'd be earning a grand or 2 a fight rather than the millions for fighting influencers or retired mma fighters.

There's also a lot of delusion about mma guys boxing, they all want to do crossover fights because fighter pay is so shit in the ufc by comparison they can earn more in one fight than a lot of them earn in their career but when it comes to boxing they're so limited because the striking skillset is so dramatically different.

Fighters with a decent jab in mma are almost non existent because if you don't do it well you're open to leg kicks and takedowns so most don't bother but in the other side those that can jab well find a lot of success as head movement is lacking compared with boxing. Jake Paul has probably put a 100 times more practice into boxing fundamentals than all elite level mma fighters.

This is all a long winded way to say mma striking doesn't translate particularly well to boxing, add to the fact he's been fighting guys in their 40s who he also has a natural 20-30lb weight advantage over and it's a pretty good game plan.

As for Tommy Fury, he doesn't seem particularly dedicated to boxing and maybe he just thinks this is the biggest pay day he can make in boxing and transfer to the celebrity/influencer life, although if he loses it could be pretty catastrophic for him.

I won't watch it but I've got no issue with it, I'm a big fan of people giving themselves CTE for a living getting as much money for it as possible for it, hopefully the rest of the card are getting a decent night's pay.

  • Paddy the baddy talks about how the Paul’s only want to box smaller mma guys on their own terms so they win. Right?
Rather than fighting them as mma. Where they’d lose.

  • It brings eyes and money to the sport. Fully here for it.

  • There was a statistic that Paul pulled out in the press conference: Fury's opponents had lost 200+ fights combined. It surprised me as a casual viewer, but yeah Fury's first fight Jevgenijs Andrejevs had lost 113 fights out of 126 ???

  • Right, smaller gloves, smaller guard, grappling. Quite a different game.

That's only responding to the last comment btw. Not sure how they're choosing boxing opponents

  • Tommys fought cans, yet goes on about how great he is. Even if he beats Jake Paul hell never be a world or even european champion.

    Hes fuckin crap

  • Beat Paul though.

  • Media personality loses to boxer in boxing match. Boxing just seems to be a pay day at the moment.

  • I made it through 6 rounds before giving up.

  • More than Paul.

  • “ Prior to the fight, Fury was told by his dad and brother he would be disowned if he lost.” enjoying this level of histrionics. Like a bad Stallone film,

  • As opposed to all of the really good Stallone films?

  • Expected Paul to be knocked out in the first, due to the much hyped gap between a YouTuber and a 'boxer'. It didn't happen and for parts of the fight they looked well matched to my untrained eye. Fury didn't have much impact to his punches and Paul was holding on a lot, though he caught Fury by surprise a few times. The ref was a distraction. It would have been interesting to go to 12 rounds.

    6/10 would watch the rematch.

  • As opposed to all of the really good Stallone films?

I never said any were really good. Rocky is a bona fide classic, though (and really good) :)

  • Fury is a novice fighter who is unlikely to be a contender for a major world title. Maybe Paul is in the same category now. I haven't watched it but it sounds like Paul was well beaten but not embarrassed. Paul and fury aren't the first poor to average boxers getting hyped because they can sell tickets (but Paul might be the most extreme version). I'm glad paul was beaten, I can stop wondering about wtf is going on.

  • Over the Top, to fair, is a classic too. Just a different type of classic.

  • This. I mean all successful fighters have had to sell tickets. This aspect seems hugely overlooked by so called purist boxing fans. Entry and progression in boxing is hard earned out side the ring maybe more than inside, from my experience at least.

  • I once got myself in an arm wrestle whilst on holiday in portugal and was holding my own against i guy i thought would beat me. Suddenly, into my head came that film and the phrase 'you have to go over the top' so I attempted to 'go over the top' and instantly lost all power i had in my arm and was immediately beaten. I felt ever so slightly betrayed. Good film though, good film.

  • No word on the AJ fight? Not much to be said really .. it was a bit dull, but hopefully keeps the ring-rust at bay for AJ. He looked to be keeping his stamina up - albeit by nothing doing much.

  • Aj gave up on the nice guy act again, what a dick.

  • Thought Jermaine Franklin did a good job against a bigger opponent. That's all I really took from the fight.
