Carradice Saddlebags

  • could I run a carradice saddle bag on my steel winter road bike without a rack? I'm looking to do light touring but don't have eyelets for a rack.

which model, if it is possible?

  • Depends on how much postage you have and whether you plan to use a Bagman or not. Seat rails to top of tire or fender is a useful measurement.

  • ^^

For light touring you could consider P-clips to attach a rack. Wouldn't want more than 10kg or so attached that way though.

For a Carradice it depends on the volume of stuff you want to take:-

    Barley: 9L
    Pendle: 11L
    Nelson: 15L
    Nelson Longflap: 18L
    Camper Longflag: 24L

I use a Barley for longer Audaxes (over 300km) where I have to carry stuff for poor weather or night riding.

As ^ says, the size bag you can fit will depend on distance between seat rails and tyre.

This is a Barley (on a 400km Audax so quite full): http://www.greenbank.org/misc/IMG_0909.JPG

  • No mudguards on a 400? tsk tsk

  • His set-up is actually pretty sensible compare to some others.

  • No rain forecast. And it was Wales.

That photo was taken here: http://goo.gl/maps/B0FGH

That bike does mudguards too: http://www.greenbank.org/misc/IMG_1267_small.jpg (for the Kernow and South West 600).

  • Also SQR Tour could be an option?

  • Has anyone fitted a Super C saddlebag with SQR on a small frame? My bike is size 50 and I´m not sure if it will rub on the tyre...

    I ride a 50...

It's one allen key bolt to take on and off.

  • I would choose a bagman over the SQR any day. I tried an SQR on my bike, which has loads of clearance and it only just fit. Also, the red plastic bit in the QR system broke before I'd even got on the road. Bagman seems way sturdier, and although the QR pins have fallen out once, Carradice replaced them for free immediately.

  • I've got an SQR block on each of my two bikes and I've had absolutely no issues using my SQR Tour for commuting every weekday for two years, a month long tour around Europe and various other rides. Nothing's snapped. I do use 64cm frames, but have the SQR as far down the seatpost as I can and there's loads of clearance. It takes about 2 seconds to remove and attach the bag and the block is definitely unobstrusive enough to not worry about leaving on for rides without it. Really can't recommend it highly enough.

But that one pictured is the Bagman Sport. To fit the Super C saddlebag you need Bagman Expedition version, which is few cm longer.

Thanks for posting the picture, do you have one showing the whole bike?

  • If you're still locking up in the same bike cage I'll pop it on your handlebars next time I remember

    Thanks buddy!

  • No worries, will see if the others turn up this weekend and drop them off too...

Not sure if a whole photo of my bike will help. How about you ask them what this dimension is?

  • Edit: only have measurement for the sport, not expedition

  • I just use one of these, without the support.

    Works a treat.

I have an old toe strap as a quick and strong easy of connecting to the seat post.

Your approach is far to rogue for me.

  • Just get a rack and rest it on that...

  • Ray reported for internet grooming.

  • Bought my Dad a Pendle for his upcoming 71st birthday.

    It's a Susan.

  • Does anyone have a bagman sport that they want to get rid of? I'd be delighted to take it if you do.

    Thanks

  • I've just bought an old Carradice bag. After a quick wash (bad form, I know) I'd like to reproof it. Does anyone have any proofing wax spare or know where i can get some in London? I can't be doing with paying postage for a £3.50 tin of wax.

  • You can get wax for proofing clothing from many outdoor shops. Fjallraven do one that's the size of a bar of soap.

  • Yeah I'm not sure the Carradice wax is magic. Plus it's pretty small.
