Amateurs.
Smallfurrys winter tip.
Roll around your house naked, covered in vasoline, and gripping a pampers nappy with your gooch. Making sure you pick up a good insulating layer of fluff. Then have yourself sprayed with rubber based paint.All-in-one winter cycling suit, with pad, and a clean house.
Sorted.

Best thing I've found for winter riding is this ^. It's Kathmandu neck gaiter aka a buff. I stole the idea off Object.
Every time I spotted his shiny customised head I noticed he had one of these on. They're full of win.
Shhhh, for fuck sake. I was still waiting on the Brick seal of approval before outing myself as a buff wearer. Also, fleece? You fucking pussy.

Saw some sun today.
It partially appears over the mountains oppsite my office window, between 12:00 and 12:45.I dont mind the dark winters. The kids go to bed easier, and get up later.

Buff=win
Mine is half fleece, half regular
I also wrap it up over my ears to keep my winter hat snug. -

Material choice was more to do with Mal going to Kathmandu to find shoes. I had a look to see if they sold 'buffs' and saw that ^ so she got it for me. I sweat like a motherfucker so it's off after a 10min warmup. It was balmy today anyway.

had a crystal night out tonight, forest trails were still frosty, and tree roots like crystallised ginger, crunched through plenty frozen puddles, 13 days til midwinters day.

Busted out the buff for the first time on the bike as my face was actually starting to hurt coming home at night (-9 deg C last night!), also finding that liner gloves + fingerless mitts aren't warm enough. Winter isn't beaten yet, not by a long shot. The whole "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" seems very relevant, especially the whole potentially being killed by winter thing.
I'll ride it to the bitter end though!

My favourite description of winter riding -
"If you like the environment, you will have the opportunity to meet mother nature’s capricious side; perhaps you will enjoy it. It is similar to the way your girlfriend is most sexy when she calls you a dickhead and throws something at you."

This sentence sums up my experience with the wind completely.
"........... the wind always knows which way you are trying to go. It knows because it blows in the opposite direction"
Good read too.

I just had to breathe on my pedals for about 5 minutes because the grease on the springs and bearings had frozen so solid that they wouldnt spin and I couldnt clip in. The batterys in my lights had frozen too...cue another five minutes of holding the batteries under my armpits.
On the plus side, roads weren't too bad from Camden to Deptford...just the odd patch of black ice.
Cyclical mantra: "Don't lean, dont lean, dont lean..."

Has anybody tried using car wax to protect bike parts from rust caused by salt? Saw some in the shop and thought that maybe I could use it on the frame and worst affected parts like the wheel nuts and pedals.
What do you think? Worth a try or waste of time? -

What do you think? Worth a try or waste of time?It will help. Anything that stops the salt getting to the paint will. A layer on butter, car wax, vasaline, helicopter tape.
