  • okay, so it seems like we have some burgeoning interest for a stratford ride. let's try to come up with a date: how about march for the first one? of course this is nowhere near summer, but then riding to stratford is nowhere near an epic, so...

  • While not necessary, if you dont eat something full of energy while your body is starved of energy you get catabolisim. Your body breaks you muscle down & uses it for energy. It does this BEFORE using up fat reserves as fat is for emergencies. Thats why athletes eat such phenomenal amounts of food & religiously drink protein shakes after workouts.

Although im not an experienced distance cyclist myself, the fact that I am a geek who absorbs useless facts allows me to know that a days cycling uses up something near 6000 calories, meaning you have to eat roughly 3 times more than usual.

You'd have to be significantly energy starved for your body to break down so much muscle that it became detrimental within the 20 minutes mentioned earlier. Most rides won't leave you in that state - especially if you eat regular on the move.

Athletes focus on Protein drinks like you say, this fits my choco milk in the bath strategy. Best followed up with a good balanced meal though.

Yes, the more riding you do the hungrier you'll get. I've been out with friends and eaten 2 main courses on a couple of occasions - just listening to the body and it's demands!

The current spin on 'recovery products' is aimed at pushing products like forgoodnessshakes and sis rego to average club athletes, who'll not notice much difference vs a good meal and proper hydration. That said, i keep rego in the cupboard for when i get home having bonked - it's quick and easy which is essential then.

  • soaking in the ice bath

Forget the group ride, Group ice bath FTW!

  • Caffeine is the key - drink it mobilise your fat stores for when your glycogen levels drop, so there is a quicker transition from glycolosis to fat burning.
So, when we do this ride to Stratford - we should meet at Starfucks and get wired.

    Are you on the game?

  • Are you on the game?

Depends how much you're willing to pay...

  • In crisps

I can have the Quavers in your account on monday.

  • Skips and you might have a deal...

  • Sorry, no deal.
    Potato based snacks only here.

  • ^haha

I was looking on medline one day and came to the conclusion that it's uncertain that that's the actual mechanism by which caffeine increases endurance and whether it significantly increases long-term performance (e.g. hours of riding) at all. There's no way I'm gonna swallow the latest energy drink superbrand marketing bullshit though, they'll do anything to increase their profits including (perhaps not entirely truthfully) claiming that caffeine will make you faster and last longer. But fuck it, I love coffee so I'd drink it whether it worked or not.

Fuck Starfucks though. Independent shops is where its at. Thom was on about a place called Coffee Roasters in Shirley, which might be worth checking out - the guy imports fresh beans and I think he roasts them on site for ya while you wait. Apparently though he's better at roasting beans than he is at actually making coffee...

  • Cheers Messenjah - I'm always looking out for somewhere that provides a decent cup of gravy.

  • Coffee is for girly-boys, real men drink tea, milk n' two

I'm fickle when it comes to tea and coffee. They're both fucking ace though. I don't think one is better than the other although I do play along with the tea vs. coffee argument, cos, it's fun innit.

  • Coffee lost it's integrity when Americans started drinking it.

  • Ballcocks.

  • tea + biscuits = winner

  • Morning Coffee and afternoon tea

  • forget the milky stuff, its all about green and red tea...

  • ^oh, just get the fuck out and never come back you farkin spunkbucket.

spunkbucket?! how old are you, 16?? its time you learnt that some people like milky tea some dont and santa isn't real. i'm sorry.

  • close, I'm 17 hahaha

  • now, this thread seems to have gone off-track. as only a few people have shown some interest and the discussion of dates didn't even get going, i'm going to name one

**SUNDAY 8TH MARCH - MEET IN MOSELEY 1PM. RIDE TO STRATFORD. **

pubs are there for those that want. trains depart there too. this will go ahead unless it's actually raining. we will be departing **15 MINUTES **after. if you're late, you'd better also be fast enough to catch up.

not too fast, not too slow.

    any takers?

  • Fuck yeah. Just let me know where in Moseley you wanna meet.
