I also have very fond memories of farting about with a tape deck as a kid. Rest in peace dude.
Ottens, who died on Saturday, had little patience with the renewed popularity of the cassette tape – or even vinyl. “Nothing can match the sound of the CD,” he had told the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad. “It is absolutely noise and rumble-free. That never worked with tape … I have made a lot of record players and I know that the distortion with vinyl is much higher. I think people mainly hear what they want to hear.”

Nothing can match the sound of the CD
It's sad that he hadn't understood the problem in the slightest.
Still, cassettes were an excellent invention. RIP.

When ITV won the rights to F1 his continued commentary was considered essential to the bidding team such was the power of his association with the sport. I imagine they made it very much worth his while.

I wasn’t the kind of boy to have heros growing up, but MMH was one. When I went to the US for the first time, I landed in NYC and immediately took a connecting flight to Hyannis and a bus to Provincetown to see his training camp.
Round 1 of the Hearns fight is the best opening round of any title fight.

Great story!
My grandad got his friends to tape most fights of Halgers fight bitd. He used to explain in the fights to me in extreme detail as a nipper. Loved watching him ever since. Round 1 of the Hearns fight is still bonkers today.
RIP champ.
