I've got this odd mental image of TAFKAP chowing down on a nut cutlet.

Not a great man but a truly great singer and band leader. A terrible loss.

He was awesome. This film about him is great - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/2gGvzXB8nJW6pGYQwLjlnfk/sweet-memories-a-tribute-to-the-unique-dj-derek
Last saw him about 10 years ago playing in a pub in Peckham.

Unsurprisingly, that's not what I meant at all.

He was such a dude. Saw him play at Notting hill arts club years ago - he did all his sets (at the time) with a suitcase of minidiscs.

Cheers for that Mark - well worth a watch.

Too much talking over the music. :)
No, a great little film. I liked the dark, allusive style in which they filmed it. People didn't half smoke a bit in those days.
It did make me wonder if that bloke ever got to make Derek some shoes.

It's been 4 years since MCA died
His death was the 1st time I cried over the death of someone I didn't actually know.

MCA was the first "celebrity" death that really hit me.
"MCA, get on the mic my man!"

Loved the Derek film. I used to drink in the Star & Garter between '87 and '89 and he was playing there then. I remember he was almost bilingual in his pure native Brizzle and adopted Jamaican patois... very odd, and yet totally authentic because of who he was and the music he played. Great (hazy) times... RIP.

Horrible news. I remember watching Seasons from the first time, he's only a year older than me so it was amazing to watch. And then he did stuff like this

Constantly flat out and pinned.
This is a nice tribute to DJ Derek (of whose work I'm completely ignorant, but he does seem to have been an excellent man):
