Fiorenzo Magni
A contemporary, and rival, to Coppi and Bartali and one hard as nails bastard.

As well as a double hard bastard an intelligent and humble man
lovely response from an interview with him
VP: Your physical and mental strength is not common.
FM: These virtues are not mine, they are my parents'. Human values come first. I have always put them before sport.

• #2907
^ Those sound like increasingly rare qualities. I shall have to read up some more on Fiorenzo.
RIP

• #2908
^^ Seems his view of human values were a little dubious during WWII.

^ Apparently a cheat and certainly a fascist.
What a guy! -
• #2910
But was he or wasn't he a fascist?
-
• #2911
Even Pope was a Nazi and people looooove this one....
-
• #2912
Yes he admitted to being a "member of a fascist militia" .
Scumsucking shitworm can GTF -
• #2913
But apparently he also co-operated with the underground. I'm not interested in the history of cycling much, but maybe someone can point us towards sources.
He was acquited (but also banned directly after the war). -
• #2914
^ Apparently a cheat!
Wouldn't see that in cycling nowadays.
-
• #2915
^^ Not heard that he cooperated with any resistance.
He was rumored to have particpated in the massacre of Partisans around Vaiano, where he was born. Nothing was proved, the wintnesses being dead, or fascists, but he admitted to membership of the milita that carried it out. -

Translation, though
*
John Foot: "Much of his career would be interpreted in political terms, a demonstration of the 'indivisibility, in Italy, between sport and politics, as well as the passion for conspiracy theories." However, the British historian argues that the mystery of Valibona today it has come to a turning point. "In 2010 - he writes - I recovered some original documents presented by the defense at the trial, which revealed an unexpected version of the story." According to two official letters of 1945, during his stay in Monza Magni actively helps the Resistance. One dated June 14 states that "the Fellow Fiorenzo Magni" with a "collaboration is not free of risk <... & made outstanding services that cooperated to the cause of liberation." Yet, Foot gloss, no report has ever mentioned this aspect of the process and the alleged past Magni and surprising even himself.

Maybe they weren't mentioned because they couldn't be athenticated.
Martini did testify on his behalf though. Maybe he did help and was trying to make for what he'd done. Who knows, he never told. What's known is that he remained loyal to Mussolini and fascism after 1943 and during the civil war that followed.
A great man?

According to Foot, the 2010 documents suggested that Magni had distributed anti-fascist newspapers, although many of the character witnesses appear to have been members of his extended family. Other documents appear to suggest that Magni was a member of a fascist militia that hunted down partisans and arrested Gino 'the pious' Bartali on a number of occasions. Perhaps Magni decided to hedge his bets in the maelstrom.

The wee lassie Charlotte I was speaking to at the end of last nights gig, killed by a hit and run driver this morning. She'd been following me on Twitter for over a year and was irate I wasn't following her back. Life blown out like that. RIP
