I've also heard the Planet X being referred to as 'about as aero as a brick'. That plus flexy means I'd agree with the others - Dolan for racing.

fair play

Ah okay, I think I'll sell the PX on then - It would probably be fine for someone wanting a sweet Carbon hipster sled bike. Only issue is whether the Dolan will clear the chainring I want to put on it. 58 teeth - anyone know about clearance? My Dolan PC is a pretty old model
-
• #3705
My old one just about clears a 53, but flex means ring rubs the chainstay when you really go for it.
-
• #3706
Well shit - I'm going to have to try it out on my Dolan then. Hopefully I can squeeze it on there. Use a longer spindle BB and deal with the incorrect chainline?
-
• #3707
Get rid of it and use a smaller one. 58 is huge!
-
• #3708
I think clearance can vary quite a bit from batch to batch, so you might be lucky. Best to try. What crank/bb?
-
• #3709
Eons ago I had a 61T on my precursa. Slightly longer spindle but not enough to fuck up the chainline too much. Wouldnt use a 58 for racing though, 53 and selection of 13-16t should do you for pretty much any race

The Dolan is my beater, so I'm just using a pair of Sugino RD2 cranks - but I plan to change those out for races
-
• #3711
Good to know, man. I might just have a shot at fitting my 58 on there! Also, it doesn't really help that I don't know how old my bike is- but I believe that it was raced at the 1st RHC, so it's coming up to 10 years old at least (Does anyone know when the Pre Cursa came into production?)
God only knows what the clearance was like on those batches!

• #3712
Why 58t? surely something like a 48/14 will suffice, or even a 52/13 if you need it that high.
-
• #3713
Because I had a 58T chainring lying around, and am addicted to silly gearing. Also, it's not like I can't get the same range of gears, by having larger cogs, but then can also go down to silly ratios like 58x12, which I thought was a good idea for a while

TBF I do have a 64t chainring on the old 50's track bike, so can see where you're going, but it's pretty ineffective!
-
• #3715
I get that - I know it's not a perfect solution, but it's what I have available, and will work just fine

Just had a great few days bombing around New Forest and Dorset on my PC - it put up admirably with the 'National Cycle Route 2' (basically bridleways) and Pelago plus Ortliebs were a good combo. Any other good areas for a spot of light fixed touring out there?

Sup guys, had this delivered Monday, my first bike that isn't a mtb. Enjoying it very much for my work commute.

Could I fit 28c Paselas on a 2017 pre-cursa?
-
• #3719
From what I've read in this thread and others, it looks like upto 32 can fit the rear but only 25 on the front with the alpina track fork.
*Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm buying soon and would also like to squeeze a 28 on the front if possible too.
-
• #3720
Have 25's on front with new track fork, doubtful you'd squeeze 28's on.
-
• #3721
28s fit in Alpina forks, you just have to find the right 28mm tyre for that.
If they come in large for their size e.g. Continental GrandPrix they won't fit but others will e.g. Continental Gatorskin or GrandPrix 4Season. -

Thanks!
I think all in it was just over £800. Hopefully I won't need to change or upgrade anything for a while!56cm frame
Miche X-Press wheelset
Sugino DD75 165mm crankset
Sugino SG75 47T chainring
Deda Elementi 42cm bars
Alpina track 16T sprocket -

Sweet, good to know. I'll have to research which 28s come in on the slightly smaller side.

Gator 28c as written

Not mine, but looks fun (seat post excluded)

I wouldn't ride the Dolan on the street. I've been riding it on the street for a long time, and it's getting too small for me to ride in the street comfortably. The bolt is perfect for comfortable street riding, whereas the Planet X or Dolan would be okay for racing
