On a more helpful note I find some jazzy trip hop is always nice to drift off to.

Ever since I gave up drinking a few years back
I have had a problem getting to sleep
my work goes on around the clock
I am semi resident across two continents
& I seem to be near permenantly connected
via school and work and entertainment
to the internet
I have lost by sleeping cues
and any notion of 'bedtime'
fundamentaly I am still acting the LOON
when really i need to chill
switch off and go to bed
I thought maybe I could listen to some relaxing music
maybe something classical ?
I thought someone around here might know something about classical music
its not just about the type of music dude, its getting an association in your mind so you can get asleep, if you condition your mind and build up a routine , try stuff like sounds of the rainforest or de-stress cd's, my girlfriend has stress/depression induced insomnia and she listens to them and they really help her to sleep, she also does some yoga to help her 'chill the fuck out', classical music is ok but is rather an aquired taste if you ask me lol ;)

Debussy's Suite Bergamasque, (Clair De Lune) is soporific in the extreme.
Beethoven's Piano Sonatas are also good, particularly No 14 (Moonlight Sonata) or try Tchaikovsky's Piano Concertos, but some of these are quite heavy.
Try and pick pieces that are written for soft instruments, Harp concertos are good, or any of Rodrigo's Guitar Concerto's, Piano stuff can be very relaxing too.

Ha, maybe the original would be better for the buddha, not sure he'll sleep so well to the remix.

if you type in
'instrumental sounds of nature', they have a selection, you can choose which ones there are, she has 'the rainforest' and it is cool actually, i put it on as well (although not cause i have problems sleeping, but think it sounds pretty cool)
Beat Stress: Relaxation for you, this was another one she bought, they have a 'beat insomnia' cd with sheep on the front as well, type all these in on ebay and you can get them on there for a few quid, if you dont use ebay i think they sell them on amazon
but you have to be open minded about these cd's (like not feeling embarassed) otherwise they will just become coasters for alcohol ;)

Whatever music you listen to, the most important thing is to get your body to associate it with sleep. Some helpful things are not spending any time in your bed (or lying down) unless you are directly about to go to sleep. I read in bed a lot, and apparently it makes your mind associate bed with mental activity. Only go to bed and whack on some Chopin when you are definatly about to fall asleep.
Personally I have made sleeping to traffic sounds my switch-off signal, as that's pretty much what I get when I turn off all my gadgets and lights at night. It's really hard to regain a decent routine, but it is so important.
As for a recommendation, my mother would be the one too ask (Classic FM, 6 til 8 in the morning, for all you early birds :) ), but nice mellow post-rock and ambient like Telephon Tel Aviv, Hrsta or Atavist and Nadja. Also, Ry Cooder and V.M.Bhatt is an amazing collaboration. So soothing.
I'm in a similar boat. I bounce around alot and spend all my time browsing the internet and not working, if I'm not drinking or cycling. It's shit. Ruins everything.

Meh, she likes classical music but it's more of a job for her. She loves all the music I listen to (exception being hardcore/metal/electro) which is really nice. I'll never see her the same way again after watching her dance with a pint of guinness in each hand at a Jenny Lewis gig. She's a diamond.
P.S. It would be oddly Oedipal to affirm or deny her hotness.

I know this sounds weird, but I find the Bladerunner soundtrack very calming. I can easily fall asleep to that.
