  • How can DnB be called 'intelligent'? It's the wankiest form of music made by and for complete fuckos!

Do people still actually listen to it? Thought that died off in the late 90's along with geezers in Chipie and Renault 5 Turbos?!

  • plug for my bro', no shame as his stuff is really good. He's signed to propatalent, DJ Rap's label and has written some of her b sides, as well as guest dj'd on Radio 1 and BBC Asian network. He was also on the DJ Nihal and Bobby Friction album last year.

oh god the ever raging war between hose and drum and bass.

just leave it at you dont like it we do.

  • LTJ Bukem must be the grand leader of Inteligent D&B, but Hospital Records rocks, especially Logistics.

And London Elecktricity, especially the early stuff is awesome if you like it a bit old skool!

    This kind

    Or this

    ???

Serious question though, is there still a DnB scene? Apart from the odd flyer posted round London with Nicky Blackmarket, Hype, Ray Keith and 34 MCs on the bill I don't know what it's all about anymore.....

Bukem was fucking shit. the whole lot of 'em ( good looking) were. they all got their engineers and programmers to make the records for them.

yeah, it's massive in the states, for example. and of course no self respecting wide-boy drives his GTI without some DNB pounding out of the 'sub'

  • It's all too easy to drop a hard drum beat and a repetitive tune and call it drum & bass. 'Intelligent' d&b has influences from funk, soul, jazz and house, and plays much more on the melody and harmony than simply having a banging bassline.

I think the intelligent bit came out of the fact that it was much better structured and it was clear a lot more time, thought and effort went into making it.

As Donut! has said, LTJ Bukem did a lot of this stuff, but there were plenty of others doing the same thing in different ways. When I've had a bit of trip down memory lane, I'll post some links (if I can find any) to stuff that defines 'intelligent' for me.

It doesn't matter much to me though on whether there's a scene or not - if it's good music, it'll still be good music 10, 15, 20 and 30 years later.

If I take the time to find some good stuff, will you promise to be a bit more open-minded and refrain from posting the cliche-ridden and ill-thought-out stuff you posted earlier?

  • 'Intelligent' d&b has influences from funk, soul, jazz and house,

All modern music has influences from funk, soul, and jazz,... house has influence from these plus disco...ALL modern 'dance' music has influence from house.

As Gil Scott-Heron once said...."there aint no new thing"

  • ok but D&B broke the mould because it was the first music for 25 years that *wasn't *based on funky drummer.

  • what font is this on the forum? I like it.

  • Technically Goldie's first experiments were with old drum breaks played at extremely slow speeds and then more uptempo machine beats applied on top...so not really that different to most other forms of dance music...and personally i'd say the original acid tracks were first because they were made entirely on drum machines rather than on samplers..but i'm not getting into a who did what, when, and how can of worms....:)

  • @ anyone who likes the tune i posted up:

  • I wasn't going to get involved in this thread, because of my huge, huge dislike near loathing of the term "intelligent drum and bass". But the drums and bass are in my blood, so here are some I've always loved...

started with roni so I might as well end with him. If I get to play one tune at my funeral this will be it. If you can get your hands on the original share the fall ep, the version on there, builds, builds, builds, and builds again...
Remember seeing Reprazent play the Jazz cafe, with the whole live band thing, si johns on bass, and clive deemer on drums, and it was fucking amazing, like the start of something bright and clean and new. I've never seen a drummer sweat so much...
