  • I wouldn't feel so comfortable riding through any park at night.
I know Victoria Park well and wouldn't want to ride through there anymore. The canal too.
    Just bad news.
At least Em is ok. Not nice for anyone to be chased.
And Mr Object: I heard the news off Gabes and was really pissed off.
    Keep safe.

Is the canal not safe, either? Good to know! I've considered cycling along there, but haven't since it started getting dark early...

  • I always want to cut through Finsbury park on my way home but the darkness puts me off. This has definately made me think I make the right decision..

A few cyclists have been pushed in.
There's not much room to get away either if you're approached.

well, anywhere that's almost very isolated tend to be a bit risky, the park are always an example most especially the lack of CCTV there (I think).

  • On the canal, I've experienced nothing worse than having a half a breeze block dropped on my foot from off the Packington Bridge as I rode under it...

  • only falling brings dropped on you... farely safe then

  • only falling brings dropped on you... farely safe then

    You said it.

  • Safer than the N29 anyway

  • Big hugs to object and em..

Tells a sad story that you have to go out of your way to remain safe but like a lot of people I'd avoid parks, canals etc

    Stay safe guys

  • shitting scumbags. thanks for the heads up Scott - Em & Em, good vibes to you...

  • I always want to cut through Finsbury park on my way home but the darkness puts me off. This has definately made me think I make the right decision..

I often go through at night and haven't had any problems yet. I suspect the fact that it's completely unlit actually deters local ne'er-do-wells from hanging around.
I was briefly confused this evening by two white flashing lights weaving across the road in front of me, but they turned out to be attached to dogs.

  • Thanks for the kind words people. Am all cool. Just a bit shaken up. Don't really know why i rode through the park if i am honest. Never do it so late on my own.
    Be safe people
    Em

why the fuck do people always attach flashing light on dogs that they have lease on??! that annoyed the fuck out of me.

"shit! a sporadic cyclist is about to crash on me! oh no wait, it's just a fucking dog who want to slobber my bollocks".*

  • Typical cuntpark at it's best...

It's true that Em has a face that attracts trouble, but still ;(

Hope your not too put off by cuntpark, its quite rare either way but loads of cuntbags around at night everywhere!

  • Bad luck Em

My housemate got mugged riding in Peckham a couple of nights ago, police are being absolutely useless at the moment, she keeps gettin put through to answerphones.

Hey that's better than running into the dog if you don't see it in dark,no?

  • Thanks for the heads-up scott.
Em, best wishes dear + well done for getting away. x

  • I was lucky, managed to get a fucking hard beating (The lit road between approach road and gore road 8.15pm) but somehow managed to escape without losing possession of anything, check the offroad thread for details. Emily is okay too but it highlights how fucking shonky this part of the town can be.

Be safe, be vigilent and above all carry a gun, x

  • That former street through Victoria Park has been a known ambush alley for years. We get reports of assaults there every season. Avoid after dark, especially if you're alone (but even groups of up to four people have been mugged there). Avoid especially in warm weather--assaults like this are comparatively rare in winter. Best wishes to Object and Em. You should be entitled to take the route you choose, but unfortunately that's the city we live in.

Administratively, Victoria Park in its entirety (after some minor boundary changes) is in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets . Like all the London Boroughs, this is an administrative entity that is rather artificial. London Boroughs were created in the mid-sixties through amalgamation of several London Metropolitan Boroughs (map attached), which had been around since 1899 and had been based on old parish boundaries.

Traditionally, Victoria Park lay on the boundaries between LMBs Hackney, Bethnal Green, and Poplar, so those associating it with (South) Hackney are not wrong at all.

  • Oh, and try to avoid all unlit, narrow environments after dark, especially canals. You will enjoy greater security on populated main streets. I'd be surprised if everybody didn't know this already, but thought I'd mention it just in case. Unfortunately, it does sometimes mean that you have to take a detour when a green link might have been your direct route (and the route that really you are entitled to take).

Other known trouble spots that we have heard about include Kingsbury Road, N1, Northchurch Road, N1 (east of the B102 Southgate Road), the main path through London Fields (plenty of assaults and muggings over the years), and Coppermill Lane east of Springfield Marina. Stay safe.

sorethroat, may I ask you in which part of Peckham did this happen ? Glad to read that you guys are safe ...

  • I live about 2 minutes from the park and ride the main road road often. Shit to hear that. I almost had a run in when I chose to ride along the canal from Dalston to Mile End but as I approached the gang I changed quickly turned around. Absolute cunts. Hope you're alright.

  • em x 2, glad you are both still alive and lively plus. most parts of town can be a bit shonky. it's right to warn people of trouble spots. but best that everywhere be regarded as such when riding lonely and late.

i don't want to hear bad things happening to people i like.

It was Montpelier Road near to Queens Road station.
