Kingsbury Road by the bridge used to be worse (there used to be a funny block on the bridge that made it very easy to block a cyclist after first hiding behind the block) and attacks have definitely gone down, but last summer there were again a few reports of muggings. If when you enter KR northbound you see people gathered on the bridge it is sometimes likely to be a better idea to turn round and do King Henry's Walk or Kingsland Passage/Kingsland Green/Boleyn Road.
There was one very nasty incident in Northchurch Road a few years ago where IIRC a woman was badly injured. There have been intermittent reports of other trouble, but not as serious. On known cycle routes, attackers sometimes lie in wait as they can be certain that cyclists will be along at certain intervals.
Most of the victims of the reported assaults were women.
Generally, even these streets are fairly safe, so don't be too alarmed but use caution. As others have said, when you're riding your bike you are far less likely to encounter trouble than if you're walking, but after dark, populated main streets are a better bet than badly-lit, narrow places like towpaths etc. If you feel really unsafe using main streets, get some cycle training.
...Thanks for the info. What does IIRC mean?

It's times like that you need a fucking gun. If I could get away with it, cunts like that would get it in the stomach and left to die slowly. The world needs to be rid of the scum.

"The freaks come out at night"
I've walked through hackney wick...down Bethnal green road....Brick lane with my children in the daytime and never felt worried.
It's under the cover of darkness that the scum comes out...but that is true of most places. -

i love hackney too
It's got good spirit, despite some of the run-down areasTo be honest the only place i even got attacked in London is Fulham, and that really was a close call years ago.
I always feel a lot safer walking through Hackney, where people are more symphatetic and more likely to help, than through posh areas where they only care if i damaged their fence when trying to avoid getting raped hile they chose to ignore my screams through their open windows.
Seriously, the more they know difficulties the more they are likely to help, that's my opinion.
Go Hackney!

To be honest. I dont like Hackney much eather. The bit around Vicky Park is nice and some of the housing/ architecture is lovley. I just never feel that safe there. Maybe I need to HTFU. Having said that I got mugged at Alexadra Palace wich is serposed to be a nice area. Oh well.

Yep, I got mugged one night on the way home. I think I got off the bus stop right by that there passage and was followed by a couple of scummers. I say think, cos I was so pissed I had it coming really. Also Northchurch Road, saw a lot of fuckers hanging around there, especially by the Church. Had a few morons cycling right at me one night. Luckily I was going so quick and heading straight at them, they bailed out my way sharpish! Such a shame as it is a beautiful road. Like much of Hackney is. Shame its populated by so many scum bags

No doubt assaulted by 2, 3, 4 or more young men between the ages of 12 to 16 (approx). Oh, how brave they are, how tough, how hardcore, truly living the thug life like the new crime kings of London they know they really are.

I used to live in tamworth, went to school in aldridge, so hung about in walsall during my youth. That place has got to be the most disgusting place on earth. I don't want to be getting angry here, I just don't get why hackney gets so much praise as being a nice place????

That is racist but also from personal experience a load of bollocks, this is of course to do with the demographic of where I happen to live - which will be pretty much the case nationwide.
