  • +1 definitely un rota-fix it, doesn't do any damage to the bike if you use a rag, only way to put a cog on or off... do it all the time, don't know why anyone would do anything else

  • Is this sprocket off yet? My god, but does this thread beat TV.

  • I just did the reverse rotafix today for the first time after my lockring came off whilst riding (scary moment that...)

It works brilliantly, just make sure you get it the right way round and don't accidentally end up putting loads of force into tightening it.

  • my lbs used a hammer and chisel after trying other methods. vice etc. eek. was replacing sprocket tho so it was cool.

  • Guess what! It's still fucking on there. tbh, I've been away from teh workshop this week so thats why but I've been riding with no lock-ring so will attempt the old chain-in-a-vice trick on sunday.

Might be building a wheel on sunday night then....

  • Last nights efforts included hammer and screwdriver, putting the back wheel against a wall and jumping on the pedal lots, half an hour of skidding with the lockring loosened and finally a dose of WD40 finally allowed me to remove the sprocket. Thought for a moment that I may have to break out the angle grinder in the absence of a vice but it finally gave up it's grip.

Now I have my lovely new Surly ring on, which will hopefully last for ever.

Ditto - not even any tools required. I will add that rag around the BB shell should be augmented by one around the chain stay if you're really, really prissy about the frame.

  • wd40 is pretty useless when it comes to removing somthing which is siezed . only good for putting grips on

  • The sprocket wasn't coming off before WD40. 5 mins after it popped of pretty easily. Not saying it wasn't seized (has seen some heavy rain and salting), but it didn't look like it.

  • +a bucket load to the rotafix method!!

Sadly I didn't check LFGSS for the answer but thought I'd come back to the fold and share my happy experience -and YouTube's advice: https://youtu.be/5qIVEpyelP0
