  • Picked up a few stouts this week. Friday’s treat, Brew York Tonkoko - tonka beans, toasted coconut, vanilla and cacao. Tastes like you’d imagine.

  • Boxcar brewery, Double Dark Mild.
Somewhere between a classic mild, and a Belgian Dubbel. 6.3% ABV. Dang tasty.

  • Big box, yikes 😂

  • I can't get enough of this

  • Big box, big cans, big percentages! I had the 440ml mango one in the bottom left, it's nearly equivalent to 2/3 of a bottle of wine in one can (you might not realise on taste alone...)

  • Pressure Drop can do no wrong

  • Tonight’s stout, they stole the Layer Cake recipe so it’s good.

  • Have been reading Mark Dredge's A Brief History of Lager (mostly very good, with slight reservations*), and was craving German food. Made Bratwurst and onions braised in beer (served with Rösti and red cabbage) tonight, and dug the most Teutonic things I could find out of the beer stash: Paulaner Helles and Franziskaner Weizen. Sadly I drank the last of the Weizenbock a while back.

*Not finished it yet, but sometimes he assumes Lager's superiority over existing beers rather than explaining it, and I think he's not always sufficiently critical about e.g. changes to brewing methods, particularly when talking about industrial lager - sometimes they're an improvement, but other times they may simply be cheaper, with a loss of quality.

  • What’s the best mail order company for Belgian beers please? My dad is having a tough time and I want to cheer him up.

Happy to help anyone out if they get a reward for referring me with a code or similar.

  • Most of the Belgian based ones have stopped shipping to the UK post-Brexit I believe. For UK based ones, I've always had decent service from Beers of Europe, who have a very good range normally;

  • Not specifically Belgian beers, but I've had success with Beer Sniffers, pretty wide selection, delivery has been pretty fast.

  • So did I; however looks like usual suspects all sold out now.

  • Thanks for your help everyone. I’ve actually since decided to ignore you all and ordered him 12 bottles of Tynt Meadow.

Stick that up your pipe unelected bureaucrats.

  • 😆

  • Was in Sainsbury's last week and saw Old Tom, so grabbed a bottle, recalling it being mentioned on here (by @rhb perhaps?)
I failed to notice it was 8.5%, was a surprising first gulp tonight!

    Nice malty, would have again.
    Not dissimilar to Golden Pride

  • Glad you like. I'm one of the folks who has mentioned it, yes.

  • Tonight’s stout - decent enough but nothing special hit my taste buds

  • Yeah, I remember it being ok but nothing amazing; the whisky-barrel-aged version (Ola Dubh?) is rather tasty though.

  • Cloudwater Birthday DIPA tonight. It’s really good.

  • Interesting article looking at the (often overlooked) Black history of beer culture in the US

    https://www.eater.com/platform/amp/22262702/beer-culture-in-america-black-brewers-history?__twitter_impression=true&s=09

The dominant image of beer culture in this country has always been predominantly white, or more specifically European: German lederhosen and Oktoberfest, English and Irish pubs, kitschy “authentic” biergartens. While beer certainly has a place in many European cultures, these images monopolize the collective imagination.

But it’s disingenuous, factually incorrect, and socially irresponsible to peddle that lily-white narrative, because it discounts the Black brewers and entrepreneurs deep in the beer game.

Be interesting to see if theres a British equivalent...
