i lived in NY for 8 months last year and loved it, lived in flatbush in BK, was a bit far out, but dirt cheap kind of on the edges of ghetto, but i had no issues, not much going on there tho, just fried chicken, liquor stores and nail bars. moved to bushwick which was awesome, a little bit further east from williamsburg, so not so hipster. if you're on a bike you can be in midtown manhattan in half an hour, and williamsburg in about 10 mins. rents much cheaper than bburg too. i wish i could go back. have fun!

To all parties interested in going to NY, word on the street is that Chris Crash lives in Brooklyn Heights.
AVOID BROOKLYN HEIGHTS.

if you're in new york on 3 may, make sure you go on the five boroughs bike ride. it's good fun. they shut down traffic in new york for it.

I tried to move over, but had visa problems. I couldn't get one.
How are other people managing this?

some longtime friends of ours live in 18th St, Park Slope, near Prospect Park in Brooklyn.. i couldn't imagine living in NYC myself but this is a great neighbourhood, just off 4th Ave.. good local shops and decent folk, i do love visiting the states, it has been a while.. last there in 2004 when GW Bush got re-elected.. i ran the ING New York Marathon.. now that is one great way to see the city.. the five boro' ride sounds similar.. we are over again next summer, planning a roadtrip from brooklyn-ithaca-niagra-guelph-muskoka-montreal-marthas vineyard-brooklyn we have alot of people to see..

5 boroughs is the NY equivalent of the london freewheel / skyride thing. fun if you like riding in cities with no traffic.
give me fast moving traffic, red lights, insane peds on cellphones, oncoming buses and general road mayhem any day of the week.
sorry teddy

On the subject of where to live
I m looking for a weeks rental of an apartment, probably in Williamsburg, next June
Any pointers ? I ve been on Craigs list to have a look and sent off numerous emails . It would be for 4 of us. My good lady wife and our 2 teenage daughters; so Williamsburg sound like it would hit the spot for them...

Billyburg definitely would. +1 on Park Slope, lovely houses and a great community feel to the area. And stoop parties FTW!

as far as i know you can go over on a visa waiver scheme. irish people definitely can. basically, you can stay there for 3 months without a visa, most jobs in nyc are cash in hand anyway so they won't be able to trace you. the best way to do this in order not to arouse suspicion is to book a flight a week or two after your arrival, and then change it when you get there. worked a treat for me in '06. i am irish though and i think there might be another arrangement with the brits.

I've lived in Brooklyn for 20 years, Unless you have shitloads of cash, throw your net really wide. Williamsburg is cool, but it's also a bit of an overcrowded nightmare too. Look at Park slope, Carroll Gardens, Dumbo, Cobble Hill, Red Hook, Green Point (Actually if you want to be in WB, Greenpoint is right next to WB and is probably a bit cheaper, and is also a better taste of real NYC than WB will give you. Awesome Polish food!) Even Bed Stuy has some decent areas nowadays. Long Island City and Astoria in Queens are literally a hop, skip and jump on a bike or about 2 or three stops on the G train to Williamsburg too. Queens will also be more afordable if your looking for a place for the whole family. Good Luck.

Move to Redhook. It's what Hackney Wick is to Shoreditch.

Hackney Wick: the scariest place in London. It's no coincidence that some Irish use 'wick' to say what New Yorkish rappers mean when they say 'wack'. You know, the rappers, you've seen the rappers. On the telly. Jumping around, by the shopping trolleys. The rappers. You know, the rappers. You've seen them. The Rappers.
Move to Brooklyn Heights. I've heard it's lovely there.
