**Prepare for self-sufficiency **
-Bring a spare tube and tube changing tools
-Bring spare batteries
-Bring extra layers, for if it gets colder
-Bring a rainjacket for if it gets wetter
-Bring a Fully Charged Mobile
-Bring a mapbookthe first year i did the dynamo in our group of four we had 6 punctures all in the last 30 miles.
one spare tube and no puncture repair kit is not enough.
bring a puncture repair kit (park patches ftw) and maybe another tube if you have space.extra layers 'If' it gets colder?
the time spent queuing at the feed station is the coldest part of the night and when the dew starts to form it can easily drop to 10°c, I'll definately be bringing an extra wool baselayer and some knee/leg warmers if i do it this year. -
• #528
Ah.. for a second there I thought you were saying only take a single spare then you were saying you got rolled by only taking one.. I got confuzzled.. learn to quote! :P
It's a long, dark ride and it's not like you can nip into Evans. I took 3 spare tubes I think and way more batteries than I needed. Remember you might be able to help someone else out.. and they they owe you beach sex.. it's the law.
It was officially FUCKING FREEZING the first time I did this after getting soaked and then cooling right down at the feed. I chipped teeth from chattering. Listen to Smiffy..

I am keen to do this - as long as it is not chucking it down. But at the moment I only have some crappy Cateye LED lights. I guess I will need to get some new ones for this ride - what kind of intensity should I be looking at?
Also, it is going to be painful for me. It will be my first 100+ mile ride. I did 55 miles at the weekend - it almost killed me and it took an age. Hurrah!
-
• #531
Just go for it. A large percentage of the people who do it have never ridden that far...you get such a huge sense of achievment once you complete it.
Regarding lights...a lot of people just use regular lights, but if you can get brighter ones then i'd recommend it personally.
-
• #532
Something equivalent to the Cat-Eye HL-EL520 should suffice for a front light. On full power with fresh batteries it's usually enough to see significant pot holes at a good distance and persuade oncoming drivers to dip their lights. As for rear lights, as long as the lights are visible from a distance and you're not right at the back it should be fine as most drivers will be used to seeing lots of riders by the time they get to you.

You will be fitter from that 55mi ride in a few days. Have a good stretch.
Try doing a 60+mi ride next week.
It's all about little builds and on the ride itself.. pacing. Not going out like a mental to keep up with so and so.. just roll along and chat to other people.
I like more powerful lights than your cateye-type jobbies simply because you can ride a bit faster knowing you can see any obstacles (unless they're steps on the Thames path and you're pissed, then the Dinottes aren't so effective).

Hey Jim and all,
good to see you last night, I take it the sun-bleached blond look means you are having more fun these days.

Now here's a question - what is everyone planning to EAT? Surely this is the most important part of the ride, and merits serious preoccupation?
-
• #550
having done a couple of dynamos i'll proffer this advice regarding food.
mix it up. do not take duplicates of the same thing, once you have eaten one squashed peanut butter bagel you don't feel like eating another. i made the mistake of taking more than one banana and having eaten 2 the 3rd doesn't seem very appertising, i would take a mix of different flavour energy bars/flapjaks/buiscuits plus something slightly sugary that is easy to snack from a pocket.(i ate jelly babies constantly)
save the energy gel for the last 10 miles (if you need it before then you didn't take enough food or failed to eat what you did bring).
take plenty of it. have always managed to eat everything i took and the first year 4 of us only made it because somebody saved a bag of macadamia nuts and cranberries which were handed out like precious life saving objects. despite bringing lots to eat.
the food at the feed station is basic and you will probably have to stand in a queue so eat something while you wait.
i'm really skinny so have to eat constantly on a ride like that so i guess some people will find it easier to fuel themselves, despite eating loads i still had 3 sugars in a couple of cups of tea at the food stop (i never have sugar in tea).
don't forget the carb loading the day before.
