I was born in Ipswich and lived around 15 miles from it for most of my life.. Like almost every other large town/city these days it has some really lovely parts but unless you *have *to search them out, because you hate the place so much but live so close, you'll never find them..
Yeah gutted.

What's all this man up ride back tag nonsense? If I could be bothered I would do some balance redressing tagging. Cuh.

Okay, let me state very clearly:
[ ] These are brackets and are to be used in mathematical equations.
( ) These are parenthesis and can be used both in written English or for mathematical equations.[ ] Can be used in English too.
Emily is [sic] in the head.
Yes, I know that is not the correct usage of it.

Ben's right. It can be used to draw attention to editor's notes or changes in a quote (another example being [...]).
Or, it seems to have become convention that you can use brackets within parenthesis (as it get confusing [hence, the brackets] if you are using double sets of parenthesis).

As a programmer - I find this deeply disturbing.

Totally. It does not parse.
Used to work with TCL/TK, now that was a language that liked brackets. {{{{}}}}
Somewhere in 20 included files, 1 bracket would be absent and the whole thing broke.

I had the misfortune to work with TCL/TK once. Dark times.

the way you drink you'd be better off pulling a Camel filled with beer! :)
That's your job. The camelbak's just for the bits in between the beer stops.

I had the misfortune to work with TCL/TK once. Dark times.
I actually enjoyed it.
lindex is about the only thing I now recall.
Well, that and the fact that if someone added a new layer near the top of the include stack, that every file below that escaped a string would have to be double escaped.
It wasn't unusual to see a file with a string escaped by 32 \'s.
And of course, that file was then only useful is included at the correct level so that the number of evals was the right amount to counter all of the slashes.
Absolutely nuts. A 2m line code base written in TCL/TK... well, purely TCL really. Was fun though, you got used to the quirks.

Grrr, everybody else has stolen some of my thunder. But there's still plenty left.
Firstly, the singular is 'parenthesis' and the plural is 'parentheses'.
Secondly, brackets are essential for switches in forum posts, such as
strikethroughor quoted text.Thirdly, and most importantly, brackets are essential for crucial distinctions between vital emoticons, i.e. :] or :). Surely you can appreciate that we'd be much poorer without being able to signal these different facial expressions via typography.
Fourthly, on that PODMAS nonsense, the surname of the guy who was best in maths in my year at school was Bodmann.
[Over to you.)

The trains that go from Norwich through Ipswich to Liverpool street usually have a dedicated bike carriage at the back that could fit maybe 30 bikes.. The smaller ones on the Lowestoft line only have proper space for 4 but given the amount of cyclists and dependant on the time you get to Ipswich station I'd imagine they'd let more on in the carriages
Yes, Ben, you shouldn't normally have a problem--not that many people ride on to Ipswich, and even those who do tend to be distributed nicely across different trains, and as Will says there's a large empty carriage on those trains.
I hear that about forty people turned up for the 8:45 from Darsham last year ...
-
• #494
surely if a lot of people all go to Ipswich they won't let that many bikes on the train? i have hassle going to scotland with mine cos they only allow 3 bikes at once.
Those trains have about 320 carriages on them. The one hippy and I were in had about 3 other people in it (bikeless), so it wasn't exactly packed.
We just rammed the bikes in the doorway.

The trains that go from London to Glasgow/Edinburgh are huge too....but they still stick strictly to the 3 bikes only rule....and if you don't book the bike on in advance some of them won't even let you on if there's no other bikes on there. :(

I think I'll give it a go after I get back from the Bike Whisperer once I get dialled in nicely with my bike.

I've never personally had a problem with the Ipswich-Liverpool st trains or indeed the smaller ones between Lowestoft-Ipswich. Virgin seem quite good about bikes in general and particularly on those line from what I've read about their guidelines.

Thought I'd post this cause I know I need reminding:
Below is Ma3k's checklist from the bridges ride, slightly amended for you to post up with your ride so that people know what to bring, check and be aware of before they set out...
A few things to read before you go:
**
Check over your bike
Make sure it is roadworthy**
-Check your tyres for wear and glass/flints/sharp objects
-Pump up the tyres(correctly inflated tyres puncture less)
-Check your lights and batteries (if a night ride)
-Check for loose bolts
-Oil the chain
If you are not mechanically competent, get a friend to help you.
Make sure you do this a couple of days before, not the day of, it'll save you a stressful couple of hours if there is something you need to sort.** Prepare for self-sufficiency **
-Bring a spare tube and tube changing tools
-Bring spare batteries
-Bring extra layers, for if it gets colder
-Bring a rainjacket for if it gets wetter
-Bring a Fully Charged Mobile
-Bring a mapbook** Help out, sound off about hazards and if people have been dropped of the back**
Usually if we are riding the first person over a nasty bump or hidden grate, sudden drop, glass, whatever will let those immediately following them now about it by shouting or pointing. So if you hear about it from the front, pass it back.
Conversely if you see people being dropped off the back, at the lights or because they are slow or having some mechanical difficulties, pass it forward so the people leading the ride know and can take steps to either wait up, slow down or go back and help them out.
** Get other peoples mobile numbers**
You can collect these in either the numbers thread or at the beginning of the ride, worth having in case you get lost off the back(or front).Take a few minutes to check out the route
Either from the route posted up or grab a map/cribsheet/directions so if you plan to leave early, arrive late or if you get separated you can get back on to the rideBe sensible
As with all forum rides we will endeavour to help out any stricken rider with their punctures and mechanical problems but on a large ride this might be difficult.
Do not bring arcane or speciality equipment that needs non standard tools or esoteric knowledge in order to sort out failures and malfunctions.
Of course if you can change a 650 tub in complete darkness in under ten minutes and have all the tools and glues, be my guest. -

good work with the tags. Much better.
Barry's FAQ is here http://www.southwarkcyclists.org.uk/dunwichfaqs.shtml
I suspect it's already been posted in this thread but I just don't care
+1 When I got the train back with Slamm two years ago there was not much room on the train to Ipswitch but once at Ipswich there was a bike carriage.
