Where to buy spokes?

Well I have the hubs and am awaiting the rims to arrive but need the spokes, so where do you buy yours from?

Cyclebasket are good for cheap but perfectly good ACI spokes, but depends what you want. If you want a funny length expect to have to search a bit.

was gonna buy at cavendish bikes, but they didn't have the right size, so went to holloway instead and found that they were almost half the price!!

why a shop - well, i know most of the lads in those two shops as they are my LBS (work and home) and they're always super helpful and give me loads of advice.

Unfortunatly my local bike shops aren't that helpful, they cater more for new bikes and are of the opinion that its best they fit everything. Thats the wonders of being in suburbia.

Well after telephoning several suppliers I went with Velomax and he knows all about us here at LFGSS an did me a good price for 130 spokes and nipples and couple of cogs as well.

Even though velomax aren't mention on this thread the search does bring them up.

dredging up an old thread, but i am doing my first build, spa cycles says ACI are good for non drive side and front only, so im guidssing they will be no good for a polo build. anyone ahve a suggestion for stronger but still not bank breaking spokes?

They are referring to dished wheels (i.e multi speed hubs not including hub gears) ACI are fine for drive side on a undished wheel such as a fixed wheel.

Prolock are excellent. I've used them on 20 plus wheels, some of my own and no problems. But use the right size spoke key as they scratch easy! It's the griplock stuff inside he thread which makes them difficult to fit at first. They stay put though. +1 to going to local bike shop, I've had so many problems with ppl I build wheels for when they order online (chain reaction are a joke in this respect so avoid!) I'm not just saying this because I work at possibly ur Lbs ;)

sapim strong is what is recommended in london.

i have been using aci spokes from outspoken without braking any. i may just be lucky.

i just ordered 48 sapim strong from SPA for my new polo rear, but I can't find 274mm spokes anywhere for my front...

Think i am gonna go for ACI for this first build. now wtf does double and single butted mean? I guess double butted is better as it is more expensive and has the word double in it...

double butted - thinner in the middle e.g 2.0 mm - 1.8mm -2.0 mm
trippl butted - thinner at the middle and and extra thick at the elbow e.g 2.3 mm - 1.8mm -2.0 mm
single butted - thicker at elbow thiner along the rest. e.g 2.3 mm - 2.0 mm - 2.0 mm

I used some triple butted DT Swiss Super comps for the disc side of some 29er wheels. They have longer thick section at the hub (elbow) to resist disc braking forces. They are also thinner at the threaded end than standard spokes (need 15g nipples)to reduce rotational weight. Work brilliantly paired wth some DT Revo's.
