Which Groupset?

  • If I were still interested in mechanical sram 12s on road/gravel, I'd probably just get the new Apex.

For sure. The new apex kinda negates the need for Ratio, to an extent. I already own Rival 1 shifters and derailleur, so the conversion won't cost a huge amount if I go for it.

Also you're right. The new ratchets look much better.

  • Anyone got an alternative for 5 arm chainring? These look ones are terrible!

    Thinking either getting some fibrelyte.

  • Does that crank have 110 and 130 BCD drillings?

  • It also has 3 different crank arm lengths built in.

So adaptable! (read: cheaper to manufacture)

  • New Red looking quite nice? Derailleur has slimmed down quite a bit, but the levers look a bit TT hooky styley to me.

  • It looks a lot better than the previous one IMO, can't wait to find how inflated is the price this time

  • no UDH?

  • Would be pointless, there's no road frames with it on

  • is that the whole point? to sell new pointless shit

  • Yeah but it's got to fit.
They sold UDH for a couple of years in MTB before bringing out a derailleur for it

  • And it was all a trojan horse to bring e-bike friendly shifting.

  • Clever but potentially good use of one. I'm already thinking about future frames 'needing' UDH, and was upset when I just bought a SRAM Eagle equipped hardtail without it.

  • Pretty much Hylex with the little shifty button on the lever.

  • GRX 1x10? Didn't think this was a thing. What are the chances of it being a 2x? Was planning on running out 1x initial anyway but definitely want the option.

    Edit, apparently 2x, mostly

  • It's only the front mech apparently

  • Not sure I follow, but I've ordered the one which apparently has a shifter, will see what turns up!

  • Pieced together a nice Dura Ace 9000 groupset only to find you can no longer buy replacement hoods for the shifters?!?! Hardly a legacy groupset... Has anyone had luck with finding replacements or alternative bodges?

  • Likely already covered somewhere on this thread but I can't find it; are 12-speed Ultegra chainrings compatible with an 11-speed Ultegra chain & cassette?

  • There used to be a company that did aftermarket, colourful hoods. Hudz or something similar?

  • Looks like Hudz are ODI now, or maybe always were, I don't remember

  • Yes, internal chain width is the same for both.

  • Yay! Thank you :)

  • I'm about to embark on an attempt to build up a new "nice/summer" bike on a relative budget. I'm in no rush, so plan to wait until I find a bargain on individual bits, because who doesn't like feeling like they got a bargain?! I'm likely to order a discounted frame today as my starting point.

I'm looking at buying an Ultegra R8170 Di2 Disc Groupset on the basis that my current nice bike has 6800 Ultegra Di2, and I absolutely love it. I've not had a lot of love for Shimano road disc brakes in the past, but hear good things about the latest generation, so it sounds like they've fixed many of my concerns.

I have 2 questions about the groupset that I'm hoping some kind soul might be able to answer:

    1. If I buy a full groupset from somewhere like Merlin, will it include brake hoses, olives and barbs, or do I need to budget for them separately? The details of the listing doesn't mention hoses specifically, but often when I've bought disk brake callipers they do include the hoses.

    2. Has anyone been roughly tracking prices for that groupset recently? Current price of around £1400 against a list price of £2400 seems like a decent discount to me. However, I'm wondering if it has been cheaper before, if it's likely to be further discounted within the next year, etc.

  • I've not bought a full groupset but when you buy levers+caliper sets they come "hosed up". You still need to split and rejoin them, so you might need some bits.

I've bought two Di2 (not full) groupsets in the last couple of years and I'm sure the one I just got for the Crux is more expensive than the one I bought for my partner's Mason a year ago. So, I wouldn't assume stuff is getting cheaper.

Yeah, I just checked and the GRX RD I bought this time around is ~£50 more expensive than the last time I bought it. The FD is ~30 more.

So for FD, RD, shifters+calipers it was about £200 more expensive this month than in Jan last year for the same stuff. I did get the newer 12s brake calipers though, but actually it was cheaper to buy the shifters and calipers separately than to buy the sets (though they won't come with hoses and shit)

  • I ordered a 8170 groupset from Merlin just over a year ago and it was £500 below list price. I don't think you'll see prices drop much below £1400 for an entire groupset. That said, I picked up another pair of shifters and a rear mech from ProBikeKit recently and saved almost £200 on RRP, so individual bargains can be had.

The whole groupset from Merlin came with all the brake fittings, so hoses, olives and barbs btw.
