  • to be expected, just like the first di2 groupset.

There was no backwards compatibility with di2 because it used different electric signals, etap is using the same Aria wireless system

  • Bullhorns and TT di2 levers.
    For the hill climb look.

  • I'm sure a few people have bought Fairlights ;)

  • I'm no influencer. I actually ride bikes, hard.

  • Depends how long you are willing to wait.

Can pick up STI Shifters for £80-90
    Rear mech - 6870 £70-90
    Junction A - £30
    Battery - £60
    Cables - £40
    Charger - £40

So, maybe £300 if you get lucky with some items.

  • I don't think it's that simple, an apple TV and Android phone both use Wifi, yet they can't talk to each other.

I'm sure they found some issues in the protocols used in last few years and changed it a bit.

BTW in etap 11s specs it's called airea and in 12s specs it's called aria.. Kinda weird.

  • That's something an influencer would say

  • yea but i doubt it is a hardware issues.

incompatibility was a design choice, not a necessity

  • I'd feel left behind building up a new bike with 11 speed etap hrd but the price of the new stuff is crazy.

Yeah I know what you mean. Haven't properly read press release on the the New stuff but assuming 12 speed requires new hub or something to fit.
Quite sure I'll be sticking with 11 speed for a good few more years yet.
I'd argue that 12 speed is something that simply wasn't needed. 11 speed wasn't broken. Just a new standard to get more sales.

Same every few years tho I suppose

  • yeah it needs some xdr freehub, the 12 speed cassettes cost a bomb too. I'm still happy with 10 speed, I'd still use it if they made new groupsets using it.

  • Respect. I stuck with 10 speed on my mountain bikes for donkeys.

  • Those who have red etap, with shifting I know it's been said it's maybe not as crisp as shimano.
But what's it like when you press the button to shift, I take it that the delay in shifting is in the millisecond range, as in a virtually imperceptible delay?

  • About 3 seconds later it shifts having made the sound of a chain being dragged mercilessly across a cassette since you pressed the button.

  • I don’t think it’s any particular delay, I think it’s just the speed of movement of the dérailleurs.
Also compared to the thunk of SRAM mechanical double tap, it doesn’t sound as affirmative, so probably why people say it’s slower.

I currently run with shimano chain and cassette because red cassettes are silly money.

  • It does a fun electric motor noise though so all your friends on the Richmond Park Gravel section will be well jelly.

  • Haha Señor_Bear i think we need to sit down and just talk through what happened. It's ok. I'm here for you. Let it out.

  • Aye I'd def be running shimano chain and cassette. Think wifli is the better option to go for eh? Seems daft not being able to use 32t cassette

  • Quite a few manufacturers just let you change the driver / body instead of the whole hub.

  • Yeah, I wasn't really thinking straight earlier, I have xd drivers on two mtbs.
Changing freehub I suppose isn't a huge upheaval.
I'm gonna go read all the official blurb on it just now too see what exactly is new. Still not convinced 12 speed on road was really necessary. Fair enough eagle on mtb could give more evenly spaced gears over a larger range.
But not sure how many folk grumble about having gaps in an 11 speed road cassette.
Maybe the 1x11 gravel bikes could have the problems of gaps.

  • Duraace di2 9070 only officially went to 28t.

I was thinking of just buying shifters and Wifli rear derailleur with 11-32t cassette to pair up with a 50t 1x chainring for my Allez sprint.

  • you click, it shifts, whole process probably takes like half a second.

  • My 7700 shifts faster then half a second.

  • I'm guessing you're not speaking literally. But if it really is 500 milliseconds that's slow as fuck.

  • Ok YouTube'd it.
    Def fast enough.

  • Timing how long it takes for a gear shift is definitely on my list of "things I'll never do". I click, it shifts, I've never thought it felt slow.
