Well if I end up with a new bike I'll be able to test this. If not, it'll be Wolftooth.

Speaking of sub-compact has anyone tried an MTB double crankset with 44/28 or 46/30 on the road? It's basically 1x with ultra-bailout. I've never seen anyone do it, does the FD not work or are there no BBs available or is the Q factor wrong or what?

Pretty sure Paul Buckley raced TCRs using a Middleburn sub-compact MTB crankset.
I can't remember what size the chainrings were though.
EDIT:
https://paulbuckleyfollowingthelongroad.wordpress.com/2015/07/03/the-grand-depart-looms/" I opted for a British made Middleburn 11 speed super compact chainset and cranks, that’s 46/30 up front matched with an 11/28 cassette on the back. This will give me much closer spaced gearing rather than having to run a compact with a wider-range cassette which I always find rather clunky and over such a long distance would be super irritating! The range will be more than enough for cruising on the flats and rollers but with low enough gears to keep going and climb anything no matter how tired I’m feeling. That’s the theory anyway. The drive train is all Ultegra so all in all very smooth shifting."

That's basically what I want, but I want a powermeter still and I'd run a bigger cassette, ie 11-32T.

but I want a powermeter
Vector 3

I want a powermeter that works*.
The only meter I'm less likely to touch than Stages are Vectors. spits
*no idea about current models, i've hated them since they 'didn't arrive' 10 years ago..
Also, on Speedplay.

Something like this plus a 44t chainring? Hope you're a billionaire and like ugly parts

I ran a rotor 3D+ crank with 46/34. 11-32t.

I'd probably go even lower, like a 30 or 28. If it's 110 BCD you can only go down to 34t no?
-
• #6486
Yeah 34t smallest on 110bcd. But can do 34t cassette and 1:1 is enough. If it's not you'd be better walking anyway. Unless mtb.

Not quite MTB but gravelly touring stuff. Currently have 50/34 & 11-36 which is fine but I don't really need the top end.
At some point in the near future I'd like to go up Applecross with touring gear so that's sort of where I'm aiming on the low end

Stages?

Riding at walking speed or less is still better than trying to walk up something in midfoot Speedplay. I thought about the Shimano 34T but think the SRAM 36T was cheaper and/or actually available at the time?
-
• #6490
Dunno, I'm a lot lighter so don't get that issue...
;)

lighter
cheat!
It was more when I was injured and I could barely pedal but yeah also fat.

You missed the LOT bit.
I did walk in tcr '16, a climb out of bolzano. Was 30% for a few km. Grim. Got like 100m from the top and just blew.

Powertap, MTB triple, 8-speed cassette. Bosh. (and bar ends)

One of my very few routing errors. 20min to do 1.7km!!!!!

You know it’s steep when the KoM averaged 6.9 mph.

I still have nightmares.

Can't be fucked with another Powertap disc brake setup.

• #6498
can you say more about how you like it better than the r785? i read that they also play nicer with the new fd (i have a 9100 fd with r785 levers)

Good work! :)

fuck that looks nasty
I don't think I've ever owned a triple. That's how I plan to keep it.
